A heartfelt thanks to our friends at the Portuguese American Cultural Center of Palm Coast!

This morning, the Portuguese American Cultural Center of Palm Coast presented Chief Deputy Joseph Barile with a check for $2,160. The proceeds stem from the very first Flagler County Bike Blessing, held on May 31st.

Every dollar of this generous gift is going directly to Flagler Sheriff's Children’s Charities, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established by Sheriff Rick Staly in 2020 to support children in our community who need it most through Shop with a Cop.

The inaugural Bike Blessing brought riders together for a morning of fellowship and a deputy-escorted ride through Flagler County, all in support of a cause close to our hearts. To everyone who rode, volunteered, and gave: thank you for turning a great day on two wheels into joy for local kids.

The Portuguese American Cultural Center has been a cornerstone of our community for decades, celebrating Portuguese heritage and giving back to Flagler County in countless ways.

From all of us at the Flagler County Sheriff's Office: Muito obrigado! 🇵🇹🇺🇸

Welcome to the weekend! Have a good day today, Flagler County.

If you want to attempt to outrun the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office — a foolish idea no matter the situation — you’re going to need a well-thought-out plan, nerves of steel, and crucially a top-notch getaway vehicle. Early this morning, a motorcycle rider went 0 for 3 as he tried to give deputies the slip.

Around 2:23 a.m., a deputy spotted a blue motorcycle cruising along with no lights and no license plate. Well… she didn’t exactly spot it first, she heard its unmuffled backfiring well before she saw it. But this was no ordinary high-octane crotch rocket. This was a rusty parts bike with what sounded like a w**d eater motor attached, which we will henceforth refer to as Blowby Betty. We went to say hello to the reckless dirt road nomad, later identified as Brian Swartz, 33 of, Bunnell; however, he decided he'd rather make a spirited bid for freedom than pull over for the cherries and berries.

Let's be clear, what followed was NOT a pursuit. A pursuit implies speed. This was more of a guided neighborhood tour, topping out at a brisk 40mph before settling into a relaxed 15mph through Hidden Trails Park as his sputtering steed begged for mercy.

Brian took a scenic meander on Mahogany, an amble on Almond, and cruised onto Cherry as deputies idled behind him. Tragedy struck our anti-hero when soft sand and a lack of torque toppled Blowby Betty pinning Swartz’s shin against the sandy streets he thought he owned.

Swartz was arrested without incident and charged with fleeing and eluding, operating without a driver's license, and no motorcycle endorsement. Blowby Betty was seized and towed to impound, where she can finally get some rest.

The takeaway: Fleeing from law enforcement is a dangerous, deadly and terrible idea at any speed. Don’t attempt the impossible, especially on a motorcycle that can be outrun by a brisk jog.

Since 2016, deputies have arrested Swartz 16 times for charges including, street racing, contempt of court, credit card fraud, failure to register a motor vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement with lights and sirens active, grand theft of a motor vehicle, loitering or prowling, operating a motorcycle without a license, possession of co***ne, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a weapon and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, and resisting an officer without violence. He has also served multiple sentences in state prison.

“The list of things this guy has been arrested for goes on longer than a CVS receipt,” Sheriff Staly added. “Sadly, it seems the Green Roof Inn has become a second home for him.”

Swartz was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility where he is being held on $2,800 bond.

Two men arrested last year following separate Flagler County Sheriff's Office Major Case Unit investigations into s*x offenses involving minors have been convicted and sentenced in recent days. Adding to numerous successful s*x offense convictions this month.

Josiah Morales, 19, of Palm Coast, was arrested in August 2025 after Flagler County Sheriff's Office Major Case Unit detectives determined he had s*x multiple times with a minor. On June 3, Morales reached a plea agreement with prosecutors, pleading guilty to child abuse, which was reduced from an original charge of lewd or lascivious battery. Following Morales' plea agreement, Circuit Judge Dawn Nichols sentenced him to five years on probation without the possibility of early termination. Morales is also required to follow certain s*x offender restrictions, including the requirements to successfully complete s*x offender treatment at his own expense, no unsupervised contact with minors, and no use of the internet without prior approval.

Jordan Pittmon, 27, of Daytona Beach, was arrested in February 2025 following an eight-month investigation by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office Major Case Unit, led by Master Detective Kathryn Gordon, into the s*xual battery of a 14-year-old victim.

Detectives determined that Pittmon, then 26 years old, first contacted the victim through Instagram in November 2023. After the victim ran away from home, Pittmon picked her up, brought her to his residence, and had s*x with her multiple times before dropping her off at a park the following day. An adult family member of the victim had previously discovered the online messages between the two and confronted Pittmon directly, informing him that the girl he was communicating with was 14 years old. Pittmon continued to communicate with her anyway.

On June 3, Pittmon pled no contest to lewd or lascivious battery and traveling to meet a minor. Following Pittmon's plea agreement, Circuit Judge Dawn Nichols adjudicated him guilty and sentenced him to 85 1/2 months, or just over seven years, in state prison. He will also be required to register as a s*x offender for life and will be on s*x offender probation for five years after his release from prison. Pittmon is currently being held at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility awaiting transfer to Florida Department of Corrections custody.

“While I personally believe all predators who take advantage of kids should be sentenced to prison, every case is different and the prosecutor and judges take that into consideration when making prosecution and sentencing decisions,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Our job is to put together a solid investigation and let the justice system handle the rest. I commend our team and thank our partners at the State Attorney's Office for their hard work to ensure these guys can't prey on other children and are held accountable for their actions. Within the last few days, we have had numerous successful convictions putting perverts on probation, in jail, or state prison, and ensuring they are designated as s*x offenders or receive s*x offender restrictions. My message to predators is this – don’t prey on our children unless you want to be arrested and suffer the consequences that will follow you for life, just as the crimes you committed will follow the victims forever.”

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Palm Coast man found to have been intentionally seeking out and viewing child s*xual abuse material. Detectives made the arrest during a search warrant following a four-month joint investigation by the FCSO Cyber Crimes/Internet Crimes Against Children Unit and the Northeast Florida Inter-Agency Child Exploitation and Persons Trafficking Task Force.

In February, the FCSO Cyber Crimes/ICAC Unit began the investigation after receiving reports from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline concerning files suspected to contain child s*xual abuse material being uploaded to a cloud storage service. Through investigative means, Cyber Crimes detectives determined the files were being uploaded from an account belonging to Jayson Jankowski, 33, of Palm Coast.

On June 4, FCSO’s Cyber Crimes/ICAC Unit, Digital Forensics Unit, and SWAT team served a search warrant at Jankowski’s residence on Beechwood Lane in Palm Coast, with assistance from members of Homeland Security Investigations and the NEFL INTERCEPT Task Force. During the search warrant, detectives interviewed Jankowski, while the Digital Forensics Unit conducted a search of the residence. During the search, the Digital Forensic Unit’s electronic storage detection dog, K-9 Birdie, located multiple electronic devices suspected to store and access child s*xual abuse material, which detectives seized for forensic analysis. Detectives also located evidence linking Jankowski to the online account used to upload the material.

While speaking with detectives, Jankowski admitted to obtaining images and videos depicting minors and using the material for s*xual gratification. When detectives asked why he sought out child s*xual abuse material, Jankowski stated he enjoyed the “thrill” of it.

“Any pervert who gets a ‘thrill’ from seeing children get s*xually abused belongs behind bars, and we are going to do everything we can to make sure that’s where they stay,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “We work with our partner law enforcement agencies, Operation Light Shine and the INTERCEPT Task Force, and others to protect our children. Guys like this can’t hide in their bedrooms and think we won’t catch them.”

Following the search and interview, detectives arrested Jankowski for 10 counts of possession of child po*******hy. He was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he is being held on $250,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing. Additional charges may be added, pending forensic analysis by the Digital Forensics Unit.
