We are pleased to welcome UB RENEW Institute to the Queen City Clean Waters Fair! Together these labs are currently working on a projects that help protect our waters and the creatures that reside in them, especially our Great Lakes.

Come meet some of the volunteers who are working to combat the effects of PFAS on our environment and our waterways and learn what you can do to help us build a cleaner more sustainable future. Stop by the UB RENEW table for a fun interactivity and a chance to win some pretty cool prizes!

💡 Project Highlight: Bird Island Wastewater Treatment Facility Upgrades

The Bird Island Wastewater Treatment Facility treats the wastewater and stormwater collected by Buffalo’s sewer system before safely returning it to local waterways. 🌊

A series of projects will upgrade Bird Island Wastewater Treatment Facility’s infrastructure, expand its capacity to treat more flows during heavy rainfall or snowmelt, and help reduce overflows into local waterways. Queen City Clean Waters Fair Partner Spotlight: SUNY Buffalo State University 🐯 Great Lakes Center

We are excited to welcome, Buffalo State University- Great Lakes Center to the Queen City Clean Waters Fair! They will be live-streaming its river invertebrate viewing station to showcase what kind of creatures inhabit our ecosystem.

The work that the Great Lakes Center does everyday greatly aligns with the mission of the Queen City Clean Waters Initiative! Join us on September 25th to learn more about how our initiative is helping improve the local ecosystem, alongside some exciting learning opportunities being presented by our partners at Buffalo State University. Buffalo State is also a great incubator in facilitating connections to the next generation of our workforce. If you stop by our Career Pathways table you will be able to learn about some of those opportunities as well.

We’re excited to welcome University at Buffalo Regional Institute (UBRI) and Buffalo Street Trees to the Second Annual Queen City Clean Waters Fair!

As a community engagement and outreach partner for Buffalo Street Trees, UB Regional Institute helps connect Buffalo residents with opportunities to bring more trees into their neighborhoods. Together, they’ll share how trees and green infrastructure can help manage stormwater, strengthen neighborhoods, and support healthier waterways.

🌊Queen City Clean Waters Fair Partner Spotlight: East Side Stewards 🌱

We’re excited to welcome East Side Stewards to the Second Annual Queen City Clean Waters Fair! East Side Stewards is helping create sustainable, healthier neighborhoods by revitalizing green spaces and transforming vacant land into shared community assets.

This work connects directly with the goals of the Queen City Clean Waters Initiative. While Buffalo Sewer is investing in sewer infrastructure to better manage wastewater and stormwater and reduce combined sewer overflows. At the heart of both efforts is a simple idea: we all have a role to play as stewards of the land and water around us. 💙

Did you know the BSA collection system includes the City of Buffalo and parts of the towns of Alden, Cheektowaga, Elma, Lancaster, Tonawanda, and West Seneca and the Villages of Depew, Lancaster and Sloan, as well as Erie County Sewer District Numbers 1 and 4?

Working closely with our municipal partners benefits the City of Buffalo and surrounding Western New York Community.

The Erie County Department of Sustainability will be joining us on September 25th to educate residents about the initiatives they are undergoing to complement the Queen City Clean Waters Initiative.

💡 Project Highlight: Underground Storage

During heavy rain or snowmelt, Buffalo’s sewers can fill up quickly. Underground storage acts as a waiting area for the excess flow, creating temporary holding space in large pipes or tanks. When space becomes available, the stored flow is released and continues through the sewer system to Bird Island Wastewater Treatment Facility. This helps prevent the sewer system from getting overwhelmed and overflowing into our local waterways.

🌊 Queen City Clean Waters Fair Partner Spotlight: bFLO Olmsted Parks Conservancy 🦋

We’re excited to welcome the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy to the Second Annual Queen City Clean Waters Fair! The Olmsted Parks Conservancy works to protect and preserve Buffalo’s historic parks and parkways, creating healthy, vibrant spaces for people and nature. Their work complements the goals of the Queen City Clean Waters Initiative, connecting our parks, neighborhoods, and waterways.

Buffalo’s parks are more than just places to enjoy nature, they are an important part of our city’s green infrastructure, helping manage stormwater, provide green space, support wildlife, and connect our communities to the natural environment.

Through the RainCheck 2.0 Program, Buffalo Sewer is investing in upcoming green infrastructure projects at several Olmsted parks, including Martin Luther King Jr. Park, and Schiller Park; several other Parks projects, which are not part of the Olmsted system.

Stop by their table to learn more about the connection between parks, people, stormwater, and healthy waterways.
