• The shelter only takes cat and dog surrenders from City of Buffalo residents. Surrendering your pet can be done by appointment only. Call 716-851-5694 to make an appointment.

• Adoptions are done on a first come basis. No appointment is required to adopt or meet an animal.

• Strays found in the city may be dropped off during regular business hours. To report a stray dog, please call the Shelter during our business hours. To contact dog control after Shelter hours, please call 911.

Meet Shaolin, a tiny Yorkie who looks like he has already decided what he thinks of you. 😂

At around 10 years old and maybe 6 pounds soaking wet, Shaolin is officially a member of the Itty-Bitty Dog Committee. He is SO tiny that you can scoop him up and barely even know you’re holding a dog.

And that face? He looks like he’s judging you. Constantly. We respect it.

But underneath that very serious expression is a sweet, timid little guy who was surrendered to the shelter when his owner could no longer care for him.

Shaolin is a coexist kind of dog with other dogs. He’s not interested in rough-and-tumble play and would rather just do his own thing. But give him a human lap and suddenly he’s exactly where he wants to be.

Because Shaolin is timid, we think a calm home would suit him best. He probably isn’t looking for a million little hands grabbing at him. A quiet home, a comfortable lap, and someone who appreciates a tiny dog would be amazing for him

Some dogs arrive at CBAS as strays. Some are surrendered. BUT NOT MARTY MCFLY!

He traveled through time in his DeLorean at precisely 88 mph, ending up here, in the year 2026. 🏎️💥🕐

Here’s the thing: his flux capacitor is in need of repair, but Marty said, “No thanks. 🙂‍↔️ I’d prefer a human adopt me and put me in a sweater instead.” 😁

Truly, that 1.21 gigawatt ⚡️ smile is enough to make you fall for this 2-year-old pittie. He’s a hunk of burning love 🔥 with a heart-shaped nose and a coat that is, metaphorically speaking, made of Velcro.

Marty McFly is hearing impaired, so while he won’t hear you call his name, we think it’s manageable because he simply does not wish to leave your side. 🥹

Yoplait isn’t just good with a spoon… she’s good with pretty much everyone! 🥄😂

Meet Yoplait, a one-year-old, 20-pound terrier mix who is basically a little cup of pure joy. 🥰

She’s happy, goofy, playful, and has never met a game of chase, or a new friend she didn’t like. Yoplait is happy to romp around with other dogs. She also has plenty to say, so expect some enthusiastic commentary from this little lady. 📣😂

She the perfect size for someone looking for a compact companion with a BIG enthusiasm.

Meet Loki — a beautiful 3-year-old Doberman ready for a fresh start 🖤

Loki came to the shelter after her owner moved abroad. It was a stressful change, but she's settled in well and is ready for a new, loving home

She has a gorgeous shiny black coat, classic pointy ears, and all the traits that make Dobermans special — intelligent, loyal, athletic, and deeply bonded to their people. Like many Dobermans, she can be a bit protective and may bark at first when meeting someone new, but warms up quickly once introduced properly. We'd love to find her an adopter with breed experience!

Loki knows sit, down and paw, loves tug and fetch, and is reportedly housebroken and crate trained (though she'll need time to settle into a new routine).

❗Important: Loki is on special food and medication for her kidneys — a lifelong commitment. Her adopter needs to be ready to continue her care, along with proper exercise and weight management. She can still have treats, just diet-friendly ones 😉

Loki has done well meeting other dogs, but she seems more interested in peacefully coexisting than finding a wrestling partner. A meet-and-greet with any resident dog would be required, and she may also enjoy being the only dog in the home while she settles into her new life.

We hope every shelter dog gets to be the beating heart of a family 💖 — and CBAS alum Dominic is a perfect example of what that can look like. Adopted as a puppy, he's grown into a beloved companion who lives life to the fullest, occasional dog reactivity and all. His parents have never let that hold him back, filling his world with pool days, lots of adventures 🌳, and regular visits to Buffalo Barkery, where he's become a familiar face at the photo fundraisers that help support organizations like ours.

For today's - Dominic's Mom Meghan writes:

"Adopting from the shelter was an easy decision. We've always believed that saving one life not only transforms that dog's future, but also opens space for another animal in need. When Dominic joined our family, it was immediately clear that he would change our lives for the better.

Dominic delights in simple joys—snuggling, jumping into his pool, savoring peanut butter, and strolling through the park. His appreciation for life's small moments has reminded us how meaningful each day can be. He even played a special role in our wedding this year as our ring bearer, proudly and happily walking down the aisle ahead of his parents.

He has been a blessing from the moment we met him, and we hope more people will have the chance to adopt their own Dominic someday."

Lady Godiva is our Week One Game Day Pup! 💙❤️🤍 Godiva is in her prime; she's got the stamina to go all four quarters, but the composure to know when to sit back and be a great teammate. On walks she's smooth and steady, and she's very curious about other dogs - always ready to make a new friend.

Like any good Buffalo Bills fan, treat-motivated Lady Godiva knows what matters on game day: the food. Luckily every dog adopted from our shelter goes home with a coupon for a free pizza 🍕 from JJ's Casa-Di-Pizza, because welcoming a new teammate into your home deserves a celebration.

🏌️Hole in one for the homeless animals of Buffalo! 🐾

We're thrilled to share that Friends of CBAS was selected as a grant recipient of Ingram Micro's annual charity golf tournament, receiving an incredible $40,000 award to support the animals at the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter!

Friends of CBAS is a volunteer-run nonprofit that supports our local shelter by providing medical care, enrichment, supplies, and other essential resources for the homeless animals who come through its doors. This generous grant will help us continue that work.

We're deeply grateful to Ingram Micro USA for its commitment to supporting local nonprofits; and to the many employees, sponsors, golfers, and volunteers who make this event possible.

A special thank-you to CBAS volunteer / Ingram Micro employee Shaye for bringing this opportunity to our attention and to our board member Tanya for representing our organization and accepting the donation!

🐾 Meet Odin — 120 pounds of lovable, goofy DO**US! 🐾

If you’ve always wanted a giant dog who thinks he’s still a puppy, Odin is your guy. 😂

This handsome Mastiff mix is almost 2 years old and is basically a giant puppy in a very large body. He LOVES to play, loves his people, loves going for walks, and thinks pretty much everyone he meets is a potential new friend.

And despite his size, Odin has been doing GREAT in his foster home, where he lives with big dogs, little dogs AND cats. He’s taken it all in stride and has shown us that he can happily coexist with the whole crew. 🐶🐱

Odin is completely housebroken and crate trained, and he’s settling into home life beautifully. We’re just working on a few little manners — like remembering that the kitchen counter is NOT a buffet. 😆 At 120 pounds, he happens to be exactly the right height to investigate everything on top of the cupboards… and apparently the little dogs’ treats are much more enticing than his own.

He’s affectionate, silly, playful and just an all-around lovable guy who wants to be involved in whatever you’re doing.

Odin did have his hip joint removed as a puppy, but he hasn’t let that slow him down. He walks well, handles stairs and enjoys getting out and about. He may need a little help getting into taller vehicles, but otherwise he’s ready to go!

If you have room in your life for a 120-pound lovable goofball, Odin would love to meet you. ❤️

We’re not sure if Mom Jeans 👖 belongs in the Good Dog, Bad Name Club… but there are definitely some of us who think the name is actually pretty fitting. 😂

And don’t worry — we’ll call her Jeanie for short.

What do Mom Jeans mean to you? Comfortable. Dependable. Familiar. The kind of thing you put on and immediately think, Yep, these feel good.

And for the dudes, just imagine your most comfortable-fitting pants and how good they feel. That’s what it’s like to be around Jeanie. 😂

Jeanie is around 5 years old, just 38 pounds, and built low to the ground — short, squat, and cute as a button. She’s comfortable in her surroundings, comfortable with people, comfortable with other dogs… she’s just an easy fit.

Don’t let those scrappy ears fool you, either. She’s a little softy at heart. She walks really well on a leash, she’s a happy girl, and she seems pretty content to just go with the flow.

We don’t know how she feels about cats yet, but if you’re looking for a dog who is easy to be around and easy to love, come meet Jeanie anytime we're open and see if she’s a good fit for you. See what we did there? 😉

And now we need you to settle a very important debate...

There are two volunteers who are very much on opposite sides of the Mom Jeans name debate — one thinks it’s absolutely perfect, and the other… well, let’s just say they are NOT a fan. 😂

What a difference a week makes ❤️

When Rose arrived at CBAS last week, she was scared. Really scared. She would sit quietly in the corner of her kennel, cowering whenever someone approached.

This is Rose’s second time at the shelter 😩. The first time, she was found as a stray by a Buffalo resident who waited out her stray hold and then adopted her. Last week, through no fault of her own, Rose found herself back with us and completely shut down.

Staff and volunteers gave her what she needed: time, patience, kindness, and a little encouragement. And look at her now. 🥰

Rose has made SO much progress in just one week. She even went to her first event and did amazing. She was out meeting people, taking it all in, and showing us that the sweet girl we knew was still in there.

5 year old Rose is a pretty adorable little mystery mix. She’s got a low-riding, sausage-shaped body, short little legs, and the kindest eyes. 😂 She’s a small package with a whole lot of personality, and we think she’s pretty darn cute.

Rose was reported to be housebroken and crate trained. With other dogs, she’s more of a coexister — friendly, but not looking to wrestle or get involved in rowdy play. She’s perfectly happy doing her own thing. We don’t know how she feels about cats.

For Rose, we think decompression, kindness and predictability are a pretty good way to start. When a dog has gone through a big change, giving them some time to figure out that they’re safe can make all the difference.

A quiet home where Rose can settle in and be herself would probably be ideal for her right now.

We really just want to see this girl get out of the shelter and back into a home again. If you can give Rose a little time to settle in, we’d love for you to come meet her. She has come so far in just one week — imagine what she can do with a little more time and someone in her corner.
