Tree work in progress 🌳🪾 The forestry crew is out at South Park this morning removing dead elm trees that are likely infected with Dutch Elm disease. Summer perennial blooms like no other, only at the peaceful and charming John E. Brent Garden in MLK Jr. Park. Plus, make sure to admire the masonry and ironwork on the gates surrounding the garden, designed by John E. Brent, Buffalo’s first African American architect.

Among Mr. Brent’s most significant architectural designs are the Michigan Avenue Branch Y.M.C.A. (1928) and the gates at the The Buffalo Zoo. Mr. Brent was also an active community leader, standing with Reverend J. Edward Nash and Mary Burnett Talbert in organizing Buffalo’s first branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP Buffalo Branch) and became its first president in 1915.

Things literally took a turn this morning when a 🚗 drove through McKinley Circle! 💔😱 Horticulture manager Noah Schaner and his team are working to clean up the aftermath. When unexpected events like these happen, our parks crew are quick to respond to ensure safety for all and minimize damage. However, it puts a strain on our workforce and delays any projects they were originally set out to do.
