In the early 20th century, inside a firehouse in New York City, members of Rescue Company 1 prepare their powerful rescue truck for the next emergency.
This classic F.D.N.Y. vehicle, marked “Rescue Co. 1,” represents the golden era of American firefighting. With its open design, large ladders, and heavy equipment, it was built to carry the most skilled and daring firefighters — men trained for the most dangerous rescues in one of the world’s busiest and most hazardous cities.
Rescue companies were elite units within the New York Fire Department. While regular engine and ladder companies fought fires, Rescue Companies specialized in technical rescues, hazardous conditions, and saving lives in situations others could not handle. The men seen here, wearing heavy leather coats and traditional helmets, were the best of the best — always ready to respond at a moment’s notice.
