I had an amazing time this weekend at the 3rd Annual Masten Family Reunion hosted by my friend and colleague, Buffalo Masten District Councilwoman Zeneta Everhart.

As someone who also grew up in the Masten community and spent part of my childhood on Hamlin Road, events like this always feel a little like coming home.

One thing I have always admired about Councilwoman Everhart is that she refuses to let anything stand in the way of showing up for her district. The rain tried its best to put a damper on the celebration, but she was determined to make sure families had a great time and that is exactly what happened.

From the games and activities to the food and fellowship, there was something for everyone. Children ran until they were exhausted, adults reconnected with neighbors and friends, and every person seemed to leave MLK Park with a smile and a full stomach.

The Masten Family Reunion continues to grow bigger and better every year, and it is a beautiful reminder of the pride, resilience, and sense of community that define the Masten District.

I am already looking forward to the 2027 reunion!

Over the weekend, I had the honor of attending the 13th Annual Hispanic Heritage Breakfast.

Hispanic heritage on this continent predates the founding of the United States, and Buffalo has long been enriched by the contributions of proud, vibrant Hispanic and Latino communities. It was wonderful to join community leaders, residents, and supporters in celebrating that legacy while helping raise funds for Western New York’s first Hispanic Heritage Cultural Institute.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this year’s event a success. Your work ensures that the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities continue to be recognized, celebrated, and preserved for future generations.

It was my honor to spend the morning of Juneteenth with our amazing sisters and brothers in labor at the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU)’s International Women’s Caucus.

Public transit is about access, opportunity, and equity for everyone. The amazing ATU members in this building ensure that everyone, regardless of income or zip code, can access employment, education, and the basic necessities like fresh food and medication.

By holding this conference, ATU is helping to make sure women and people of color are included and welcomed in these critical public transit careers.

Because when public transit works, communities work. And when women are behind the wheel, it works well.

Juneteenth weekend does not owe me a thing!!!

I had such an amazing time celebrating the historic 50th anniversary of Buffalo’s Juneteenth Parade.

There is something powerful about seeing thousands of Black people gathered together in unity, in celebration, in joy, in peace, and in love. It truly melts my heart.

There are so many people and organizations to thank for making this weekend such a success.

Thank you to the Maafa - Juneteenth of Buffalo FestivalJuneteenth Foundation for your tireless, often thankless work throughout the year to ensure that the thousands of people who participate in and attend this parade are cared for, welcomed, and celebrated.

Thank you to the The City of Buffalo for hosting this parade for the 50th consecutive year and for recognizing the importance of celebrating Black freedom, Black culture, and Black joy.

Thank you to my incredible staff (Team Ellicott) and volunteers, who worked so hard to make sure Ellicott showed up and showed out. Our float was amazing. The music was live. We were marching deep. Everything was perfect.

Thank you to the Buffalo Police Department and the many gun violence prevention and community organizations who worked hard to help ensure everyone’s safety.

And last, but certainly not least, thank you to the people of Buffalo and everyone who came from near and far to celebrate with us. The parade cannot happen if the people do not show up and you showed up beautifully.

It is officially Juneteenth weekend, and tomorrow we celebrate 50 years of Buffalo’s historic Juneteenth celebration right here in the City of Buffalo.

I am sitting in the historic Martin Luther King, Jr. Park with Juneteenth Executive board member and Parade Co-Chair, Michael Smith as we prepare for a weekend of celebration, reflection, and community. We are excited for the events taking place on Buffalo’s East Side as we honor a tradition that has united generations.

This year’s theme, “Honoring the Past, Serving the Present, and Inspiring the Future”captures the very spirit of Juneteenth. We remember those who came before us, celebrate the progress we’ve made, and recommit ourselves to building a brighter future for those who will come after us.

For 50 years, Buffalo has proudly celebrated freedom, resilience, culture, and community. Tomorrow, we honor that legacy and continue the work.

We are here. We are thriving. And we are not going anywhere.

I can’t wait for the festivities to begin. I’ll see you at the parade!

Today we do more than raise a flag. We raise a story – a story of people who endured the unimaginable, and yet they never surrendered their humanity. It’s a story of faith in the face of cruelty. A story of resilience in the face of oppression, and a story of freedom delayed but never denied.

On June 19, 1865, Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, found out that they were free – two years after their freedom was granted.

Juneteenth reminds us that laws can change overnight, but that justice takes much, much longer to arrive.

Juneteenth is not simply a commemoration, but a call to action. It is a proclamation that Black history is American history. We gather not merely to remember slavery, but to celebrate our survival.

So today let us honor those whose shoulders we stand on. Let us commit ourselves to creating a Buffalo, a New York, and an America that is more just and equitable. The greatest way our ancestors can be honored is not simply by remembering them. It’s to continue the work.

Today, I had the amazing pleasure of serving as a moderator at the WNY Leadership Summit for the
Experienced Leaders
track, hosted by WNY Women's Foundation. I was joined by Dr. Kimberly DeSimone, and together we guided a discussion on Leading without Losing Yourself. One of my biggest takeaways was the discussion on boundaries. Sometimes, as women in leadership, we feel pressured to overprove our worth and value. We often feel the need to exhaust ourselves and be everything to everyone while being very little to ourselves. We need to learn it’s ok to say no. It’s okay not to have all the answers. It’s okay not to try to tackle everything. We are in the positions we are in because we are qualified, often overqualified. I want to thank all of the beautiful ladies that came today and I’m looking forward to having many more of these meaningful conversations.
