This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich history and lasting contributions of Buffalo’s Hispanic and Latino communities.

From generations of Puerto Rican families to neighbors with roots throughout Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, Latino communities have helped shape Buffalo’s neighborhoods, culture, businesses, arts, and civic life.

Today marks 25 years since the darkest day in living memory. Nearly three thousand innocent people, who were simply going to work, getting on a flight, and going about their lives, never made it home. They were killed in a vicious terrorist attack – the worst ever committed in world history.

And in the years since many thousands more have died from illness caused by toxic exposure from those attacks, many because they selflessly rushed into danger to help bring others to safety.

We have rebuilt, we have compensated the victims and their families, and we have brought the perpetrators to justice, but for thousands of families across the country, the trauma and the pain remain.
So we do our best to honor the victims. We remember their lives. We recognize their innocence and courage. And we never forget.

Today’s groundbreaking is about more than expanding a building; it’s about expanding access to care, prevention, and resources for families on Buffalo’s East Side and across Western New York.

I was proud to join Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer and community leaders in the Fruit Belt for the groundbreaking of the expanded Broadview Community Outreach and Engagement Center.

Roswell Park has long been an indispensable part of our community, but we know that improving health outcomes also means bringing information, prevention, screenings, navigation, and support directly into the neighborhoods that need them. This expansion moves us closer to that goal and strengthens our work to address the health disparities that continue to affect too many families.

I was especially honored that New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins joined us in Buffalo. Her leadership in securing critical state resources for this project is a reminder of what government can accomplish when we make thoughtful investments that directly improve people’s lives.

Thank you to Assembly Majority Leader Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes, NYS Assemblywoman, Senator April Baskin Broadview Federal Credit Union, and the leadership and staff of Roswell Park for the partnership and persistence that brought us to this moment.

Strong communities require strong institutions, strategic investment, and leaders willing to work together to deliver results.

And today, in the Fruit Belt, we saw exactly what that looks like.

I look forward to seeing the doors open and, more importantly, seeing the lives that will be touched because these services are closer, more accessible, and rooted in the community.

This Labor Day, I’m thinking about the generations of union leaders and workers who fought for rights that many of us today take for granted. I’m thinking about the children who breathed in toxic fumes and worked in terribly unsafe conditions, often leading to severe injury or death. I’m thinking about the exhausted factory and mill laborers who worked upwards 100 hours per week just to survive – and were robbed of the most basic joys of life. I’m thinking about the teenage girls who worked at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory.

Labor Day is about realizing where we came from and how we got here. Basic protections like child labor prohibitions, the 40-hour workweek, minimum wage laws, and lifesaving workplace safety standards did not materialize out of thin air. They only happened because generation after generation of workers organized and demanded a fair deal. They only happened because unions and workers marched, lobbied, and even suffered physical violence to secure their rights. They only happened because past generations had the courage to stand up to the most powerful men the country, and against all odds, managed to secure crucial victories.

So this Labor Day, I encourage everyone to learn about the history of the labor movement – and about the legacy of exploitation that made it necessary. Then let’s carry that legacy forward, and commit to supporting rights, safety standards, and fair compensation for all workers.

Please be advised the administration has canceled bulk trash collection for fall 2026. While the Common Council seeks to reverse this change, residents should make plans to use other options to dispose of bulk trash items.

Households can leave up to three pieces of bulk trash with their usual weekly trash collection or drop items off at the East Side Transfer Station, 793 S. Ogden St.

I recently stood with my colleagues Fillmore District Council Member Mitch Nowakowski, senatoraprilbaskin, and a representative for our Majority Leader Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes, NYS Assemblywoman to advocate for the Governor to sign the Good Food NY bill. I spent years working on this legislation with Majority Leader Peoples-Stokes, the sponsor, and I have seen this bill earn broad support because it is good for New Yorkers and good for New York agriculture.

This legislation will expand access to fresh, high-quality, ethically sourced food while keeping more of our dollars circulating in local communities and supporting New York farmers.

At a time when our farms are facing real challenges and federal cuts are threatening critical food programs, New York must continue to step up.

Good Food NY means better food for our students and seniors, stronger local economies, and greater support for the farmers and producers who feed our communities.

I commend for representatives and community partners for their leadership and persistence in moving this important legislation forward. Now, I urge Governor Hochul to sign the Good Food NY bill into law. 🧑‍🌾🍎🌽🍽️

What an amazing, busy weekend I had around the community.

I had the Oxford Square Block Club Summer Party, Housing Opportunities Made Equal’s Community Day, Unity Day at Masten and Main, the McCarley Gardens Community Fun Day, Friendship Baptist Buffalo Church’s Family Day, True Bethel Buffalo & Niagara Falls Outreach Ministry’s annual backpack and clothes giveaway, and then ended Saturday night at the annual Buffalo Funk Fest. 😮‍💨

All these amazing summer events and community parties exemplify the togetherness and unity that characterizes our great city. We are truly fortunate to have so many incredible houses of worship, block clubs, and other community leaders working to provide safe, family friendly outings for our residents. Your hard work and dedication goes to show that we are truly the City of Good Neighbors.

Special thanks to True Bethel for giving back to our community and making sure our students are returning to school with backpacks, clothes, supplies, and whatever else they need. Your hard work ensures students can start the school year equipped with the tools for success.

And shoutout to the organizers and performers for another great show at Funk Fest - D-Train, Heatwave, and my brother from another mother, D-Mott. One thing I know for sure, Jefferson Avenue knows how to party! 💃🕺🎸🎶 Awesome music, great vibes, and just a perfect way to wrap up another beautiful summer in Buffalo.

Some moments just make you stop and smile because you know they represent something bigger. ❤️

Today, we celebrated Dress for Success Buffalo and the incredible work they’re doing to help women move forward.

For me, this is about confidence. It’s about that feeling when you look in the mirror and say, “I’m ready.” Ready for the interview. Ready for the first day on the job. Ready to walk into the room, take your seat at the table and know that you belong there.

And I love that so much of this work is rooted in women supporting women. That sisterhood — sharing resources, opening doors, offering encouragement and helping one another recognize our own potential — is powerful.

Congratulations to Michelle Barron on 12 years of leadership and to Dress for Success Buffalo on this exciting new chapter in Downtown Buffalo.

Their new Career Center will be a place where women can come not only to prepare for work, but to prepare for what’s next — new opportunities, greater independence and a future they can build for themselves and their families.

When we invest in women, we invest in families, neighborhoods and the future of our entire community.

That’s the kind of investment I’m proud to stand behind. 💜
