Rooted in the belief that science creates opportunities and shapes our world, the Buffalo Museum of Science is a non-profit educational institution dedicated to providing relevant science programming to learners of all ages in the Buffalo Niagara region. Through interactive science studios and exhibits designed for multi-generational learning, the Museum showcases its extensive collection of more than 700,000 specimens and artifacts representing all facets of the natural world with an emphasis on Western New York. With a focus on raising the science literacy in the Buffalo Niagara area and beyond, the Museum offers hands-on workshops, camps, panel discussions, guided tours and enhance learning opportunities for its guests and community. The programs of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences are supported in part by public funds from the County of Erie; City of Buffalo; New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; and our members and friends.

When did naptime stop being a thing in school? And would you believe that we had a school in Allegany State Park 90 years ago???

This baby porcupine was photographed taking a little rest break on a branch at the Museum’s School of Natural History (AKA – the “School in the Forest”) in Allegany. While you probably won't find one of these little prickly guys at Tifft Nature Preserve these days, they are around WNY.

This photo is one of more than 1,200 our collections team has processed and preserved in partnership with Chicago Albumen Works with funding from an Access and Innovation Grant awarded to the Museum by the Western New York Library Resources Council - WNYLRC.

The Moon is giving our Go Fish! project quite a celebration today: it's a Full Sturgeon Moon WITH a lunar eclipse!

Some fun fish facts about sturgeon for your Friday:
🐟Lake sturgeon have been around for nearly 200 million years and haven't really evolved much since then
🐟Lake sturgeon can weigh as much as 800lbs and grow to be over 8ft long
🐟We now have properly stored lake sturgeon in our collection, thanks to the Go Fish! project and the hard work of our own Abbey Hines & her team. Thank you for your work over the last three years and good luck on your next adventure!

We aren't the least bit bittern seeing this adorable photo of least bittern chicks! 🐣🐥

Fun fact: the least bittern is the smallest member of the heron family and you can see them in their natural habitat at Tifft Nature Preserve! They're among the more than 260 bird species you can see at the Preserve.

🌞Two weeks ago, the sun got all the attention for a solar eclipse...

🌕Tomorrow night into verrrrrrryyyy early Friday morning, it's the moon's turn to be in the spotlight... er... shadow!

If the weather holds, we'll be able to see a near-total lunar eclipse (the moon passing through the Earth's shadow) and will appear to be mostly deep red in our night sky.

According to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the best time for us to see the eclipse will be at 12:14 a.m. Friday.
