Today, FBI Buffalo gathered to remember the 2,977 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and the first responders who risked- and gave- their lives to help others.

9/11 changed the FBI and our work here in Western New York. In the months that followed, FBI Buffalo investigated the Lackawanna Six, six local men who had traveled to an al-Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan before the attacks.

Twenty-five years later, our mission remains clear: protect the American people while honoring the lives, courage, and sacrifice we can never forget.

We will always remember.

This has been making monumental changes across the board to modernize and optimize the Bureau and continue our mission of protecting the American people, like revamping our special agent application process to cut down on bureaucracy.
We have been able to shrink the pipeline by 100 days without reducing our standards to get high-quality personnel onboard faster to continue protecting communities across the country.

This FBI is crushing narcotics networks and dismantling criminal enterprises across the country. As part of Summer Heat 2.0, our teams have seized nearly 10,000 kg of narcotics and 3,116 weapons, and made 5,097 arrests, and we’re not slowing down. On this International Overdose Awareness Day, we reaffirm our commitment to combat drug trafficking organizations and crush violent crime to restore safety in our communities.

🚨FBI BUFFALO SAFE STREETS TASK FORCE: CRUSHING VIOLENT CRIME IN ROCHESTER

This summer, Buffalo’s Rochester Safe Streets Task Force is working alongside City of Rochester Police Department and our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to identify the individuals driving violence, dismantle their criminal activity, and get them off Rochester’s streets.
Operation Clean Slate is Summer Heat in action: combining our resources and intelligence to target the individuals driving violence. Our commitment to Rochester doesn’t end when the summer does.

No single agency can defeat violent crime alone, but together, we are a force.

Violent crime continues to decline nationwide 📉

In 2025, the U.S. murder rate fell to one of the lowest levels on record. This progress reflects the impact of strong teamwork between the and our law enforcement partners working every day to protect the American people.

🚨FOUND GUILTY: Federal Jury Convicts New Jersey Man of Terrorism Offenses Relating to His Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie

🚨FBI BUFFALO CASE UPDATE:
A federal jury convicted Hadi Matar of attempting to provide material support to Hizbollah, a designated foreign terrorist organization, engaging in an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries, and providing material support to terrorists. In August 2022, Matar attempted to murder author Salman Rushdie in an effort to carry out a fatwa calling for Rushdie’s ex*****on because of a novel published by Rushdie in 1988.
