Getting into a scorching-hot car is the worst part of summer driving. Try these quick tricks to cool your cabin down fast before you hit the road!

June is Internet Safety Month, and this week we want to talk to every parent, grandparent, and caregiver in Buena Vista about something important: the conversation about online safety doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to happen.

A few things worth knowing:

Many apps that seem harmless have direct messaging features that give strangers private access to your child. Know what they're using.

Keep devices in shared spaces at home. Oversight and privacy can coexist.

Make sure your child knows they can come to you without fear of getting in trouble if something online makes them uncomfortable. That open door matters more than any parental control.

Remind them that people online are not always who they say they are, and that no real friend will ever pressure them to share photos or meet in secret.

If your child tells you something concerning happened online, take it seriously and reach out to us. We are here to help, not to judge.

HAPPY WORLD BICYCLE DAY, BUENA VISTA!

With summer vacation officially underway and today being World Bicycle Day, our neighborhood streets, parks, and sidewalks are full of kids riding bikes, playing ball, and enjoying the sunshine, just like this throwback to last year's bike parade!

We want to remind all drivers to take an extra second to scan your surroundings, especially when driving through residential areas:

- Slow It Down: Stick strictly to the speed limits in our neighborhoods. A few miles per hour can make a life-saving difference if a child unexpectedly darts into the street.
- Ditch the Distractions: Put the phones down. A text or notification can wait.
- Expect the Unexpected: Remember that young children playing can easily get distracted and forget to look both ways before chasing a ball into the road.

Let’s look out for our youngest neighbors and work together to make this a safe, fun, and accident-free summer for everyone in Buena Vista!

We love seeing our local businesses get the statewide recognition they deserve! Check out this awesome feature by WDBJ7 showcasing Holy Cow! right here in Glen Maury Park .

Buena Vista is lucky to have such incredible spots that make our community feel like one big family. You might even spot a couple of familiar BVPD faces in the segment sharing their favorite menu picks! (We can confirm the double smashburger and Cookie Monster milkshakes come highly recommended.)

Thank you to Elizabeth Kohl and the whole Holy Cow! crew for keeping our community fed and making BV feel like home every single day. If you haven't stopped by yet this season, make sure to head down to the park and show them some local support!

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that suspect Michael Puckett has been captured and taken into custody in Surry County, NC. While we are incredibly thankful to the multi-agency law enforcement team whose tireless work brought a swift and safe resolution to this search, our hearts remain with our brothers and sisters in Carroll County.

The capture brings relief, but it does not ease the profound heartbreak of a line-of-duty death. The Buena Vista Police Department stands in firm solidarity with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, and our thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support will remain with their deputies, staff, and families as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
Thank you to everyone in our community who shared the original lookout alerts. Please join us in keeping the entire Carroll County law enforcement family in your prayers tonight.

Our hearts are breaking today for the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and the loved ones of the deputy who was tragically killed in the line of duty last night. We are also praying for the full recovery of the second deputy who was struck but protected by his ballistic vest.

Virginia law enforcement is a tight-knit family, and when one of us hurts, we all hurt.
Please share this post to help get the suspect’s name and details out across the state. Michael Puckett is actively at large, armed, and extremely dangerous. If you see him or have any information regarding his whereabouts, do not approach, call 911 immediately

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
