At least 25 people have lost their lives following two separate ship fires this week.

On Wednesday night, a passenger ferry fire off the coast of the Philippines claimed at least five lives, with dozens of passengers still unaccounted for. Earlier today, a second fire broke out on a docked cargo ship in China, leaving at least 20 dead and several missing. Emergency crews continue search efforts in both regions.

In 2019, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Journal's cover story "Close Quarters" examined the challenges and concerns related to fires on large marine vessels, such as extreme temperatures, tight spaces, and hazardous cargo.

Today, sadly, was the last day Joel Behr will be working with us. Active Duty US Coast Guard, he will be transferred from Southwest Harbor, ME in the next month. Joel has been an amazing part of our Maine Maritime Academy - Fire Training team and we are so thankful for that! We wish you all the best as you move to your next home port!

Joel gifted us a flag we will fly whenever training is happening on the fireground!

Classroom and water survival today and live fire tomorrow!

Welcome, Mariners!

We’re excited to welcome mariners to the Fire Training Field at CPMD for our September training!

Over the next two days, our students will put their skills to work through hands-on, practical fire training designed to build confidence and prepare them for real-world situations at sea.

🔥Today marked the first day for USCG1 fire training on the TSSOM! It's an adventure just to GET to the vessel as we have to move across floats and past a working construction zone. Helmets and floatation devices are required and gear is carried over and donned in the RoRo bay.
It is a great learning experience for our students as well as our teaching assistants and instructors.
Today students had vessel familiarization tours of our fire safety equipment as well as a first try at hose handling.
HUGE shout out to the TSSOM crew for their support today!!

🔥 USCG1 Fire Labs began last week. The first lab covers gear familiarization (fit, function, limitations and more) as well as mask fit tests to ensure students have a mask that fits correctly and will protect them when needed. Next week we move to the TSSOM for more hands on fire training!
And did you know? All of our fire training teaching assistants volunteer with Castine Fire Rescue Department! We appreciate their help in class and on calls in town!

Did you know Manager of Fire Training Lisa Marks Burton and Fire Instructor Lindsey Dale both volunteer for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation? As Advocates in the Until Everyone Goes Home program, they work to support the mission of reducing preventable line of duty deaths in the fire service. They spent 2 days at a brief, but highly impactful, Advocate Summit in Savannah, GA. The presentations, formal and informal discussions and connections with fire leaders from across the nation are so valuable and enable them to continually improve the MMA Fire Training program for undergrad students and industry professionals.
