A Community Project Built with Pride

Today marks the completion of a project that means a great deal to all of us—the new playground at Schamback Park in Westport is officially open! 🎉

What makes this project even more special is that it was completed almost entirely in-house by the dedicated employees of the Oldham County Road & Parks Maintenance Department. From the first day of clearing the site to the final grading, sidewalks, fencing, and finishing touches, our crew took great pride in building something that will serve our community for generations.

This wasn't just another work assignment. It was an opportunity to create a place where children can play, families can gather, and memories can be made. Every truckload of material, every piece of equipment, and every hour spent in the summer heat was an investment in Westport and the people who call it home.

As Director, I couldn't be prouder of this crew. Day after day, they show up with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a commitment to serving the citizens of Oldham County. Their dedication, craftsmanship, and willingness to tackle any challenge made this project possible, and it shows in the finished product.

I'd also like to thank the Oldham County Fiscal Court for supporting this vision and making this investment in our community possible. We appreciate everyone's patience and encouragement throughout the construction process.

Now comes the best reward—seeing families enjoy this beautiful new playground.

If you stop by Schamback Park, take a moment to appreciate the hard work that went into making it a reality. And if you see one of our Road & Parks employees, thank them. They don't seek recognition, but they certainly deserve it.

But we're not finished yet...

We're excited to share that more improvements are on the horizon for Westport! Plans are currently underway for the repair and replacement of the riverfront docks, bringing safer, modernized access to the Ohio River while preserving one of Westport's most treasured attractions. We look forward to sharing updates as this exciting project moves forward.

We hope this playground becomes a place filled with laughter, friendships, and unforgettable memories for many years to come.

Good morning OC!

Spring is in full swing across Oldham County! From storm cleanup and roadside mowing to ongoing park and roadway improvements, our crews have been hard at work tackling projects all throughout the county.

I would also like to take a moment to recognize our team during Public Works Appreciation Week. I’m proud to say we have some of the hardest working and most dedicated employees around. Whether it’s late-night emergency callouts for trees blocking roadways or long days preparing parks and facilities for the community, these guys are always ready to get the job done. If you see one of our crews out working, give them a wave and a thank you!

A lot of excitement continues to build around the long-awaited playground project at Schamback Park and the new playground installation in Westport. Our crews have spent countless hours hauling material, compacting, grading, and preparing a solid foundation for what will become a great new attraction for the community. In the coming weeks, work will continue with fencing installation, sidewalks connecting to the pavilion area, and additional finishing touches.

At the same time, many other projects remain underway throughout the county, including continued improvements to the ball fields at Wendell Moore Park, drainage upgrades, paving operations, roadside maintenance, and several additional projects currently in progress.

🌳🚧 Oldham County Road Department Update 🚧🌳

Good morning OC!

Our crews have been hard at work across the county today as we continue gearing up for a busy spring season.

In Borowick Farms, teams are actively clearing dead and hazardous trees to prepare the area for upcoming paving improvements. This work will help ensure a safer roadway and a smoother surface for residents once paving begins.

Over at Schambach Park, crews are making great progress with tree and stump removal in preparation for the installation of a brand-new playground. We’re excited to see this project take shape and bring an updated recreational space to the community.

We’re also continuing improvements at the Wendell Moore Park ball fields in Buckner. Materials are beginning to arrive for dugout rebuilding, along with ongoing field repairs to improve playing conditions. More upgrades are on the way as we continue investing in these facilities for our community.

A lot of progress happening behind the scenes—stay tuned as these projects continue to move forward!

Good morning OC!

Winter is finally behind us and spring is in full swing. There’s a lot happening across the county. Paving has begun in multiple areas, and mowing season is underway. Crews have been out maintaining roadsides as well as our parks.

An in-house project was recently completed on Haunz Lane, where a major drainage issue was addressed along with failing asphalt. A new drainage ditch was constructed to prevent ponding, and the shoulder has been repaired. Additional improvements are planned for the entire roadway in the near future.

Our crews have also taken on a renovation project at the Oldham County Little League fields in Buckner. This includes fence repairs, dugout improvements, painting, and general cleanup. The fields are being maintained and dragged daily, with more extensive repairs planned to correct low areas and rutting.

The weekend is finally here—and no snow in the forecast!

Below is some information that may help answer a few frequently asked questions. I’ve done my best to gather and share these details, and there’s some valuable information included that we hope you’ll find helpful.

🧂❄️ Winter Operations – How We Fight Snow & Ice in Oldham County ❄️🧂

Many residents ask why you may see us pre-salting roads, why plows sometimes leave snow at driveways, and why conditions can still be slick even after treatment. Here’s a quick look behind the scenes:

➡️ Plowing is Priority
Plows remove the bulk of snow. Salt helps prevent ice from bonding to the pavement—but it does not work instantly and does not melt everything.

➡️ How Road Salt Works
Salt lowers the freezing point of water. It works best when pavement temperatures are around 20–30°F and becomes less effective as temperatures drop, especially below 10°F. Pavement temperature (not air temperature) is what truly matters.

➡️ Why We Often Pre-Salt with Dry Salt
Kentucky storms commonly start as rain or mixed precipitation. Liquid brine can wash away before freezing occurs. Dry salt stays in place and activates when moisture appears, making it more reliable for many of our local events.

➡️ Why Driveways & Mailboxes Get Blocked
When a plow is angled, snow must go somewhere. The blade rolls snow to the right by design. There is no way to stop or “catch” snow as it comes off the blade. Clearing every driveway during a storm would prevent roads from being opened and emergency routes from being maintained. This is unavoidable and never intentional.

➡️ Why Some Roads Improve Faster Than Others
Traffic helps grind salt into the surface and break up snowpack. Low-volume roads often take longer to show improvement.

➡️ Extreme Cold = Plowing First
When temperatures are very low, salt effectiveness is limited. During these times, plowing is the most effective operation.

Back at it today!

Crews are out running their routes and assessing reported mailbox damage. Repairs and/or replacements will be made when deemed necessary.

We currently have a limited number of replacement mailboxes on hand. An order has been placed for additional boxes and posts, which are expected to arrive no later than Wednesday of next week. Until then, we will do our absolute best to make temporary repairs at a minimum so mail delivery can continue.

If you have already reported mailbox damage—or were planning to—there is no need to do so at this time. All routes will be evaluated today and documented for necessary repairs.

Good afternoon, OC!

Crews have been out checking road conditions and addressing areas as needed. Overall, county roads are in great shape, with only a few shaded spots on rural roads still showing some issues.

We’ve received feedback regarding cul-de-sacs and driveway obstructions. Unfortunately, with the amount of snowfall we’ve experienced, this is not only a countywide concern but one being faced across the state. Typical snow events rarely create these challenges; however, this was far from a typical storm.

Cul-de-sacs present a unique challenge due to the number of driveways around the perimeter. This significantly limits where large volumes of snow can be placed without creating windrows, which can make entering or exiting driveways difficult in some cases.

I will be sharing a diagram below that can help both crews and homeowners better understand how to prepare and reduce the impact of these situations.

We will continue doing our absolute best. While these minor inconveniences may occur, they are outweighed by the overall goal of keeping roads clear and safe for travel.

We hope this information helps answer questions and provides guidance on how to minimize impacts around driveways and mailbox approaches.

Good morning OC!

We made it through the storm! Cleanup operations will continue over the next several days.

Temperatures remain extremely low, which limits how effective salt can be, so we appreciate your patience. As the sun comes out over the next couple of days, noticeable improvements will occur across county roadways. Low-traffic roads will likely be the last to show major improvement, as fewer vehicles travel these routes to help break up packed snow once salt begins working.

If your mailbox has been damaged, please be patient as repairs will be addressed. There is a common misconception that plow trucks strike mailboxes; however, in most cases this is not what occurs. When large amounts of snow come off the plow, the force can damage mailboxes or posts that are aging, unsecured, or weakened. Similar to a heavy snowball, snow can hit with significant force, and there is no effective way to prevent plows from throwing snow from the roadside.

If a mailbox is beyond repair by the homeowner, we ask that you submit an email report rather than calling. This allows us to track and address repairs in the order they are received.

Guess what… it’s still snowing!

Crews have been back out for some time and are continuing to clear their assigned routes. The storm is expected to continue through approximately 5–6 PM today.

Plow trucks will be doing everything possible to keep up, but some areas may be impacted more than others. Periods of heavier snowfall will move through at times, which can cause recently plowed roads to become covered again.

We truly appreciate everyone’s cooperation with traffic and keeping vehicles off roadways. This has been a tremendous help to our drivers, allowing them to work more efficiently and safely.

With total snowfall expected to exceed 10–12 inches, cul-de-sacs may see large amounts of snow pushed toward the outer edges, creating windrows in front of driveways. As mentioned in previous updates, this is unavoidable with snowfall of this magnitude. Drivers have been instructed to create a passable drive lane around the perimeter to minimize driveway obstruction.

We ask homeowners to assist by clearing around their driveways and mailboxes as conditions allow. This is not a typical event, and everyone will be impacted in some way. Please keep this in mind before submitting complaints—our crews are doing the best they can to reduce impacts.

Please stay safe and only travel if absolutely necessary.

Good evening, OC!

Crews have been out working to keep roadways as clear as possible. Pre-treatment was applied throughout the day Friday to help with the initial impact of the storm. Now that temperatures have dropped and the sun has set, salt is no longer effective. At this stage of the storm, plowing will be the primary operation.

Please continue to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary or in the event of an emergency.

The current shift will end at midnight and resume at 7:00 a.m. This allows our crews time to get much-needed rest so they can work safely and continue protecting the community.

With the amount of snow forecasted, there will be significant windrows in subdivisions. These snow ridges may block the ends of driveways and around mailboxes. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable with plowing operations. We ask homeowners to assist with clearing these areas so mail service can continue.

Plow blades are fixed-angle and cannot push snow away from these locations. Please keep this in mind before contacting the department regarding these issues.

As a community, please help us help you—this is not an ordinary storm.
