Made possible through Governor Patrick Morrisey's America250 Mural Project, this statewide initiative celebrates West Virginia's rich local and national heritage through hand-painted murals.

In support of the commemoration of America's 250th anniversary, the West Virginia Department of Tourism awarded each county a $5,000 grant to assist with the costs of materials and artist fees.

Tom Acosta, the contracted artist for Upshur County's project, hand-painted a large oil painting that will be professionally framed and displayed in the Courthouse Annex. The outdoor mural is an enlarged reproduction of the original artwork, printed on specialized material designed to withstand the elements while preserving the integrity and detail of the painting for years to come.

Did you know Upshur County is home to two designated Mountaineer Mile trails?

These trails are part of Governor Patrick Morrisey's Mountaineer Mile initiative, which encourages West Virginians to walk at least one mile each day to improve their health and well-being. Official Mountaineer Mile trails have been designated throughout West Virginia, including many located within our state parks.

Right here in Upshur County, you can enjoy two designated routes:

Upshur County Recreational Park – This one-mile route begins at the entrance adjacent to the West Virginia State Police Barracks and winds through the park's trail system.

Buckhannon Riverwalk – A scenic one-mile route that offers a beautiful walk along the Buckhannon River.

Whether you're looking to start a healthier lifestyle, enjoy the outdoors, or simply take a break and get some fresh air, these trails provide a great opportunity to get moving and explore all that Upshur County has to offer.

So grab a friend, bring the family, and take on the Mountaineer Mile right here at home! πŸŒŸπŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸŒ²

BUCKHANNON WV - Upshur County DHSEM Partners with Perimeter Platform

The Upshur County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) has partnered with Perimeter Platform to create a new additional source for local incident information.

Perimeter is a website accessible from mobile devices and computers that does not require an account or opt-in to get important information. The website detects your location and displays pertinent information about incidents in your area. Using data from the Buckhannon Street Department, Upshur Communications Center, Upshur DHSEM, and West Virginia Department of Highways, anyone visiting www.perimetermap.com will see detailed information about incidents affecting residents in Upshur County. Examples of incidents displayed on www.perimetermap.com would be road construction and improvements, certain utility work, traffic issues lasting more than one hour, detour routes for road closures, locations of shelters and warming stations, and evacuation routes/areas.

We currently have May 12th polling locations and information showing on the map, as well as a DOH paving project in the southern end of the county. Information regarding the WV Strawberry Festival, including parade detour routes, street closures, and other information will be added starting next week.

Bookmark www.perimetermap.com to stay informed regarding incidents in Upshur County. Perimeter is NOT a replacement for the NIXLE emergency alert system. Perimeter is simply an additional tool to push out pertinent information to our community members. If you have not signed up for NIXLE yet, please do so by texting your zip code to 888777 or visit www.nixle.com to create an account. We will also continue to share information on social media using our official Facebook, Instagram, X, Nextdoor, and Ring Neighborhood accounts
