Sheriff Stacy Williams sorrowfully announces the sudden passing of Sergeant John Johnson, who suffered a medical emergency and died on duty today, May 1, 2026. Sergeant Johnson had been with the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office for 18 years. He began his career as a patrol deputy, later became an investigator, and for the last 10 years, he was attached to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as a Drug Task Force Agent.

“I ask that the citizens join me in praying for his wife and children as they deal with the immense loss of a husband and father,” states Sheriff Stacy Williams. “John was a valued employee and a friend to many in this office. We mourn the loss of one of our own, and we want his family to know that we are here for them during this heartbreaking time.”

Annual Summer Burn Ban Begins May 1

🚫The Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s annual summer burn ban goes into effect today for 54 counties, primarily in and around metro Atlanta.

This seasonal ban is in place each year to help protect air quality during the summer months and will remain in effect through October 1.

⚠️ What this means:

➡️ Open burning is not permitted in the affected counties during this time
➡️ The ban is separate from current wildfire-related restrictions in other parts of the state

Please follow link to the EPD for additional details and rules: https://epd.georgia.gov/air-protection-branch/open-burning-rules-georgia

🔥Due to ongoing extreme drought conditions, the Haralson County Fire Department, in collaboration with the Georgia Forestry Commission and our local public safety partners, is strongly urging all citizens to adhere to local burn bans and to refrain from any outdoor burning at this time.

Dry conditions significantly increase the risk of fires spreading rapidly and becoming uncontrollable, putting lives, property, and natural resources in danger. Even small, routine burns can quickly escalate under these conditions.

We are in constant communication with the Georgia Forestry Commission and other local agencies and are being provided with the latest information to help guide our response and keep the community informed.

We ask for your cooperation in helping keep our community safe. Please avoid all open burning until conditions improve and official guidance changes.

Thank you for doing your part to protect Haralson County!
