Provost Dee Matthews explores storytelling's power in Episode 6, Season 4 of the Social Work Journeys podcast. 🎙️

Ever wonder why some stories hit us harder than facts? 🤔

Tell me—do you find it easier to be honest online than face-to-face? Drop a 🔥 if you feel this.

I've noticed that people often share more openly through writing and storytelling than in real convo. Why? Because stories help us understand ourselves—just like cave drawings or poetry. They’re not just art; they’re a primal way to process our emotions and experiences.

Metaphors can often say what words can't. They tap into emotional truths in a way straightforward explanations never could.

Maybe it’s time to lean into storytelling to understand ourselves better.

Huge congratulations to our very own Dean Janet Shapiro! 🎉

We are thrilled to announce that Dean Shapiro has joined the editorial board of Translational Data Science for Social Impact (TDSSI), a new interdisciplinary journal bridging data science and meaningful social impact.

As TDSSI prepares to publish its inaugural issue, it aims to serve as a premier international forum for rigorous, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of data science, social sciences, and health sciences. The journal is committed to advancing data-driven, ethical, and equity-centered research that directly informs policy and practice—values that sit at the very heart of our mission here at GSSWSR.

Please join us in celebrating Dean Shapiro's partnership and her contribution to shaping the future of scholarly research!

🎙️ Provost Dee Matthews shares her insights!

Ever feel like poetry has to be complicated? It doesn’t! 🌟

Sometimes, all it takes is five lines about a memory or a place that feels safe — no need for perfection.

Drop a 🔥 if you’re ready to start simple.

When we stop overthinking, we create space for genuine discovery. Writing isn’t about impressing others — it’s about uncovering parts of ourselves that’ve been silent.

By starting small, you let your words flow naturally, like poetry is meant to do. What’s a memory or smell that instantly transports you?

Share below or save this as your poetry reminder — simplicity is power. ✨ Maybe it’s time to stop overcomplicating and just let it billow out.

"Provost Dee Matthews: Writing is more than just putting words down — it’s healing.

Have you ever noticed how writing can help make sense of chaos?

As social workers (or anyone), we know trauma disrupts our stories, fragmenting memories

and feelings. But putting pen to paper—even informally—puts you back in control of your narrative.
When you write, you shape how you see what happened, reclaiming your agency

and perspective. Poetry, with its metaphors, helps face tough truths gently —

saying the hard thing with beauty and depth.
Ever used writing or poetry to process your feelings? Drop your experience below 👇

It might inspire someone else to start their healing journey."

Her leadership is defined by a quiet steadiness and a graceful commitment to service that allows our entire community to flourish.

📸 Celebrating at the staff picnic! (L to R): Laura Henrich, Sue Witherite, Janet Shapiro, Diane Dell'Arciprete, Janet Bradley, and Natalia Veloz.

Provost Dee Matthews dives into the connection between social work and poetry. Ever thought they were just different worlds? Tag someone who needs to see this ✨

Both deeply rooted in trauma, identity, and resilience—just expressed in different ways. Social workers step into the mess, while poets paint in the imagination. But at their core, both aim to restore dignity and make people feel seen.

It’s wild to think they’re actually close cousins—sharing that same grandparent: visibility.

What’s your take? Do you see these as separate or connected too? Drop your thoughts below! 👇
