Did you know arson on wooded lands costs Florida taxpayers millions of dollars each year? It’s a felony and is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000, five years in prison, or both.
Florida is already in a historic drought this year, and arson is a serious crime that not only threatens property and our natural resources, but it also risks the lives of our citizens and our wildland firefighters. Our department does not tolerate anyone who purposefully endangers the lives of Floridians, and we are committed to bringing arsonists to justice. If you see suspicious activity, help protect the lives of citizens and first responders by reporting it.

🚨 Burn Bans Blanket Majority of the State 🚨

Despite some recent rains, drought conditions continue to plague Florida as the peak of the state’s wildfire season looms. As a result, 48 of the state’s 67 counties have declared a county-wide burn ban as May begins.

The Florida Forest Service is urging every Floridian to follow any county-imposed burn ban, which prohibits unauthorized outdoor burning. The state’s dry season lasts through June, and any fire that starts during these conditions – including drought, high winds, and low humidity – could quickly get out of control and be a danger to property or lives.

Florida has experienced over 1,900 wildfires since January 1, burning nearly 120,000 acres.

An active burn ban prohibits activities such as campfires, bonfires, burning yard debris, and other open fires. These bans do not include outdoor burning authorized by the Florida Forest Service.
