When the call comes in, having the right equipment can make all the difference.
The Bryant Fire Department would like to express our appreciation to Fear Powersports and Polaris Off Road for donating a generator to our department. This generous contribution will help us better serve our community during emergencies and disasters.
The generator will provide power for emergency lighting at nighttime incidents, support rescue operations, power lighting and other equipment at fire scenes, assist during extended storm-related power outages, and help keep critical equipment running when and where it is needed most.
We are fortunate to have community partners who recognize the importance of supporting volunteer fire departments. Your generosity helps us continue our mission of protecting lives and property.

For tonight’s training we had Parker May and Melissa Sudhoff from IU Health Jay come and put on a Stop the Bleed course for our members. Stop the Bleed consists of the skills of direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquet use. Due to the far distances of our area to get to a trauma hospital these skills are critical for our members and the public to practice. Even Firefighter Austin May’s son was able to successfully perform the skills. Thanks again to Parker and Melissa in taking time out of your night to come work with us!

This isn’t just a training for first responders. This is open to the public to come learn about farm safety or just see what the fire service is doing. Keystone Cooperative will be on site with their grain bin rescue simulator.

Great day of training! Seeing what we are capable of doing as a county when it comes to moving large amounts of water efficiently. We figured out some areas that we can improve on and limitations we may have but no better place than the training grounds to figure that out and to strengthen our bonds and ability to work together!

For our training this month we went out to the stone quarry and practiced using our turbo draft. Using the turbo draft and a 150’ stretch of 5” hose and 2 1/2” hose we have access to basically unlimited amount of water for a tanker fill site. The elevation change and distance posed some difficulties, but we were able to flow the deck gun sufficiently to simulate filling a tanker. On flatter ground we should be able to go further and make once in accessible water sources available.

For EMS week we would like to show appreciation to our local Jay County EMS! We’re glad to work with them and we can’t show them enough appreciation. We also want to thank our own members who have gotten EMR and EMT certifications!

A few of our members were able to get together with Jay County Emergency Management to put on the latest tabletop exercise for the county. It was a great experience for the personnel doing the planning and for the ones that participated as responders in the tabletop.

This past weekend, Jay County first responders came together for a tabletop exercise focused on a hazardous materials transportation incident. These exercises allow agencies to coordinate response efforts, review and refine emergency plans, and strengthen communication in a controlled environment.

Training opportunities like this are essential to maintaining preparedness for emergencies that may not happen every day, but require a coordinated and effective response when they do occur.

This exercise was created and facilitated by Jay County Emergency Management staff and members of the Bryant Volunteer Fire Department.

We appreciate the responders who took time on a Saturday to participate including Bryant Volunteer Fire Department, Dunkirk Fire Department, Jay County Sheriff's Office, Portland Police Department, Pennville Fire Department, Salamonia Volunteer Fire Department, City of Portland Fire Department, Jay County EMS, Portland Professional Fire Fighters Local 5356, and IU Health Ball, Blackford & Jay.

Thank you to everybody that came to our breakfast to support us! We had a great turn out and you kept us busy all morning! Thank you to Mallory Hudson our District 8B Miss Flame for coming to help us serve food! She was a great help and not only was able to help dish out the pancakes better than we could but was also able to put up with our joking around and sarcasm and was able to dish that out better. We had a fun morning and can’t wait for next years!
