🇺🇸 CLOSED TODAY IN OBSERVANCE OF LABOR DAY 🇺🇸

The Brazos County Veteran Service Office is closed today, Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. We will reopen tomorrow for normal business hours with our next walk-in day being Thursday.

Labor Day is more than the unofficial end of summer. It was created to recognize the hard work, contributions, and achievements of American workers who helped build and strengthen our nation.

The holiday grew out of the labor movement of the late 1800s, when workers advocated for safer workplaces, fairer wages, and reasonable working hours. The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City in 1882, and it became a federal holiday in 1894.

Today, we recognize the generations of Americans whose work—past and present—keeps our communities and our country moving forward.

🇺🇸 Coffee, donuts, and good company — that’s a pretty great way to spend a Thursday morning! ☕🍩

VSO Kale Murray and Assistant VSO Diana Mills spent part of the morning at American Legion Earl Graham Post 159, enjoying some coffee, mingling, catching up with familiar faces, and getting to know a few more members of our local veteran community.

Of course, we had to grab a quick picture with Post 159’s new Commander, James Pfeffer! 📸

Every Thursday from 8–10 AM, Post 159 opens its doors for an informal morning of fellowship, coffee, donuts, and conversation. The coffee and donuts are provided and served by the wonderful members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 159. ❤️

And you do NOT have to be a member to stop by! Veterans are welcome to come hang out, meet some folks, swap a few stories, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee.

We’re always happy to help spread the word when one of our neighboring counties is offering something valuable for Veterans and their families.

And here’s a reminder worth sharing: Texas counties have Veteran Service Officers who are there to help Veterans and their families navigate the benefits and resources available to them.

Meet Gordon Plumlee, Madison County, Texas Veterans Services Officer. Gordon is helping connect local Veterans with benefits, resources, and support—including this weekly recovery meeting in Madisonville.

The meeting also welcomes first responders AND the spouses of Veterans and first responders. ❤️

Looking for good conversation, a little fellowship, and maybe some bacon? Come join the informal Veteran Breakfast at Cracker Barrel every Wednesday morning at 7:00 AM!

There’s no program, no agenda, and no obligation—just Veterans, VSOs, friends, stories, and conversation around the breakfast table.

This morning, Brazos County VSO Kale Murray and Assistant VSO Diana Mills stopped by, along with Robertson County VSO Paul Baker!

There are definitely some familiar faces who make this part of their Wednesday routine, but new faces are always welcome. We love meeting new people and hearing new stories.

For many Veterans, a service dog is more than a companion—they're a highly trained partner providing greater independence, safety, confidence, and support every single day. Service dogs can be trained to assist with a wide range of needs, including PTSD, mobility limitations, medical alerts, and more.

This month, we celebrate the incredible dogs, trainers, organizations, and handlers behind these life-changing partnerships. ❤️🐕‍🦺

🎗️ September is National Su***de Prevention Month.

This month, we're reminding our Veteran community of something that matters every day of the year: you don't have to carry everything alone.

Su***de prevention isn't only about what happens in a moment of crisis. It's checking on the friend who's gotten quiet. It's noticing when someone isn't quite themselves. It's making the phone call, sending the text, sitting down for coffee, and being willing to ask, “Are you okay?”

And you don't have to have the perfect words or be a mental health professional to make a difference. Sometimes being willing to listen is where it starts.

The Veterans Crisis Line is available 24/7, and Veterans do not need to be enrolled in VA health care to reach out.

Throughout September, we'll be sharing information and resources focused on su***de prevention, mental health, recognizing warning signs, and supporting the Veterans in our community.
