It's a busy year for severe weather around us...

This is getting old... 90% of Indiana has had at least 1 tornado warning this year. The entire state has had 521 tornado warnings.

We are up to 68 tornadoes for the year in Indiana, with likely at least 70 confirmed by the end of the day today.

2026 Tornado Warnings (as of June 23):
▪️Illinois: 895 tornado warnings
▪️Indiana: 521 tornado warnings
▪️Kentucky: 187 tornado warnings
▪️Ohio: 155 tornado warnings
▪️Michigan: 143 tornado warnings

UNFORTUNATE STATS:
▪️83 of 92 counties have had a tornado warning in Indiana in 2026.
▪️Just 9 counties have not had a tornado warning in Indiana
▪️We had over 140 tornado warnings just Father's Day alone.

NOTE: These warnings include an original warning and then extensions & trims. They have to be listed as a new warning. So you can have the same tornado and circulation with multiple warnings alerting it.

NOTE 2: This also accounts warnings that touch/include the state line. The warning gets tagged under the state it’s in and what state it touches (if it touches another state).

If it seems like we have done more severe weather nets this year than usual, you are right!!! And just ask our neighbors to the west who have seen more tornadoes this month than ANY MONTH EVER!! Thanks to everyone who volunteers with us during severe weather warnings to provide vital reports to the National Weather Service!!!!!!

Disaster Relief Now Available for Many Hoosiers

Governor Mike Braun has declared a disaster emergency for 63 Indiana counties impacted by severe weather, flooding, tornadoes and the June derecho.

If your primary residence was damaged and you are uninsured or underinsured, you may be eligible for up to $25,000 through Indiana's State Disaster Relief Fund to help with recovery.

-Assistance is available for eligible homeowners
-Applications are now open
-Additional counties may qualify as damage assessments continue

The State Disaster Relief Fund applies only to individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. State funding cannot replace insurance coverage, which is the primary and best source of protection from storm damage. The fund only addresses the costs of repairing, replacing or restoring property that is the primary residence of the applicant, and cannot be used to help pay insurance deductibles.

Some interesting thoughts....

During storm season, this might be the most asked question I get…

“Why do storms always split and go around my city?”

I have a few thoughts…

1) My number 1 is down below in the comments. ⬇️

2) Usually it’s not true. It’s psychological or a recency bias. A few storms that happen to miss your direct spot can lead to frustration or confusion about why when hundreds of atmospheric reasons may be at play, different for each event.

3) Is it Lake Erie? Actually, that’s possible. The lake does play a major role in our weather. Sometimes it does keep higher instability to our south with a lake breeze. But sometimes, like the Point Place tornado it can actually lead to violent clashes and stronger storms.

4) Is it because I live in a city? Nope. Towns and cities don’t influence storms enough cause them to shift or deflect. Actually because of the Urban Heat Island Effect it could be argued warmer cities more easily produce more daytime pop-up storms.

5) I live near a River. Again, for something as large as a storm a river is almost no influence on a storms behavior.

6) We live in a hill or valley! While this can be true to impact severe weather in parts of the US. We live in an incredibly flat place. Topography has a very minimal influence.
