History

The Sam Bass Fire Department began in 1980 as the Sam Bass Company of the Round Rock Volunteer Fire Department and was staffed solely by volunteers. All support was received through generous donations from the public. The original two fire trucks were a used 1971 brush truck that came from the oil fields and a 1946 Chevy pumper. They were housed in a 2-car garage that also served as the m

eeting and training facility. In 1984, the department obtained its first Class-A pumper and in the late 1980’s the Brushy Creek MUD donated a portable building that served as the first real classroom and office for the fire department. In the early 1990’s, three bays were built at Station 1 and the previous building was donated to a local church and hauled away. Over the years, two more bays have been added, along with a conference room, foyer, and living quarters for the crews. In the mid 1990’s, voters approved the creation of ESD 2 and in 1998 Sam Bass went from being a volunteer fire department to a combination department, utilizing both paid staff and volunteers. In 2003, station 2 was built. In February 2004, Station 2 was fully staffed and operational. In 2019 our 3rd station was built and fully staffed. Sam Bass Fire Department operates multiple apparatus and has mutual aid agreements with the Austin, Cedar Park, and Jollyville Fire Departments. SBFD is staffed daily by 10 paid crew members (three per station plus a Battalion Chief), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, operating on a 24 hours-on / 48 hours-off rotating schedule. Volunteers staff as an extra FF or full engine crew during high call volumes or major events.

Our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters of the Round Rock Fire Department. Over the weekend they lost FF DPO Zach French. We can only imagine what the French and RRFD family are going through at this time. Please be thinking of them and prayers if you are able.

We were honored over the last several days to stand watch and staff over the Round Rock community while RRFD was able to take some time to grieve and be present for the French family.

We especially want to thank our partners at Williamson County Emergency Services and Williamson County TX, Sheriff's Office for responding with us to this call.

Let’s use this time to support one another and be a strong community for the French family.

Zach, rest easy brother and let us take it from here.

Over the weekend, the Round Rock Fire Department lost one of our own. Fire Driver Zach French served this community alongside the men and women of RRFD for nearly 19 years, and his loss is being felt throughout our department and the public safety community.

We are grateful for the support shown by neighboring agencies, our fellow employees, hospital staff and the community during this difficult time. Many community members may have noticed neighboring agencies assisting with emergency response coverage or gatherings of our firefighters over the past several days. These acts of support allowed our firefighters the opportunity to be together and support one another, and we are deeply appreciative of everyone who made that possible.

Out of respect for the family, we will not be sharing additional details at this time. We ask that you keep Zach’s family, friends and fellow firefighters in your thoughts and prayers.

🔥 National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day - Join Us!🔥

We’re excited to take part in National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on Saturday, May 2 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Williamson County Regional Park

The Leander Fire Department, Round Rock Fire Department, and Sam Bass Fire Department will be teaming up for a family-friendly “Touch-a-Truck” style event. Williamson County residents are invited to meet firefighters, explore apparatus up close, and learn practical ways to help protect their homes and community from wildfire risks.

This is a great opportunity to connect with your local fire departments and get valuable information on community preparedness.
