Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at Glynn County Fire Rescue? Now’s your chance to find out!

Applications are still being accepted for the 2026 Glynn County Fire Rescue Citizens Fire Academy. This eight-week program gives community members an inside look at fire and emergency services while learning directly from GCFR’s leadership and personnel.

What you can look forward to:

• Detailed information and presentations from Fire Department leaders

• Hands-on activities and demonstrations

• An inside look at fire and emergency response operations

• CPR certification

• Opportunities to interact directly with GCFR personnel

• Snacks and drinks provided during sessions

• And much more!

Application Period: August 13–September 16, 2026

Academy Begins: Thursday, October 1, 2026

Sessions: Thursdays, 6:00–8:00 p.m. (Except Week 5: Wednesday October 28th)

Minimum Age: 18 years old

Last night, the Glynn County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a new ordinance, requested by Glynn County Fire Rescue, concerning the recovery of costs associated with hazardous materials incidents.

Hazardous materials incidents – including chemical spills, leaks and releases – can require significant personnel, specialized equipment, supplies and outside assistance. The new ordinance allows Glynn County to seek reimbursement for actual, documented expenses so that, where permitted by law, the costs are paid by the responsible party rather than Glynn County taxpayers.

Emergency response services will continue to be provided regardless of a responsible party’s insurance coverage or immediate ability to pay. Any recovered funds will follow the County’s normal budget process and are intended to help support the equipment, training, personnel and supplies needed for hazardous materials response.

Two newly remounted GCFR ambulances were inspected by the state this week and are expected to be placed into service today following final preparations.

Earlier this year, two of our Frazer, Ltd. ambulances were transported to Texas, where their existing patient compartments were removed and placed on new Ford F-450 chassis. The completed ambulances have now returned to Glynn County and are ready to begin serving our community from our Sterling and Ballard stations.

The project was funded through an award from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), a federal law passed in 2021 to aid communities in their recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Glynn County Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS), brought HazMatIQ’s PropaneIQ hands-on training to Glynn County this week. Personnel from Glynn County EMA, Glynn County Fire Rescue, Glynn County Public Works, Kings Bay Fire Department, McIntosh County Fire Department, and Gulfstream participated in the training.

The course focused on the anatomy and construction of various propane vessels, including DOT cylinders and ASME tanks, along with their valves and associated components. Participants gained hands-on experience with techniques for controlling propane leaks and, when appropriate, safely flaring off propane to reduce pressure and render a damaged vessel safer.

Propane incidents present significant hazards to firefighters and other emergency responders. Understanding how these vessels are constructed, how their valves operate, and how to safely manage a damaged or leaking container is critical when responding to propane emergencies.

Hands-on training with our regional partners strengthens our collective ability to safely and effectively respond when these incidents occur.

Sunday, Glynn County Fire Rescue prevented a catastrophe.🐈

As they were fighting a fire at The Kendall apartments on Altama Avenue, Firefighters were made aware of two cats 😺😸that were in the building. Lt. JD Smith rescued the first one, while Firefighter Travis Holder (pictured, with cat) managed to pull the second feline from the building.

Fortunately, the fire was put out quickly with no reported injuries, feline or human, though several families have been displaced. Great job, guys! 🧑‍🚒👨‍🚒🧑‍🚒

We are launching our first Citizens Fire Academy this fall. This eight-week program gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at their local fire service through interactive sessions, demonstrations, and a hands-on skills day.

Glynn County, the City of Brunswick Government, and Jekyll Island Authority will host a community remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, September 11 to mark the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The ceremony will honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost and recognize the courage of first responders, service members, and everyday Americans.

The event will take place on the lawn of the Historic Courthouse at 701 G Street in Brunswick and will include moments of silence, musical tributes, and the presentation and retiring of colors.

Our keynote speaker will be Larry Thompson, former United States Deputy Attorney General.

All residents and visitors are invited to join us for this solemn observance.

Up early and ready to go.

This morning, seven GCFR recruits are heading out for their first day of the 480-hour Basic Firefighter Academy. This academy is a partnership with Liberty County Fire Rescue, with assistance and support from Glynn County Fire Rescue.

The next several weeks will be filled with classroom instruction, hands-on training, physical conditioning, and plenty of hard work as these recruits begin preparing for a career in the fire service.
