Have you enjoyed a delicious summer squash or carved a pumpkin for Halloween?
If so, thank a Squash Bee!

Squash Bees are native solitary bees that specialize in pollinating cucurbits, including squash, pumpkins, gourds, and zucchini. Unlike generalist bees, they rely almost exclusively on these plants for pollen. Females nest in underground tunnels in well-drained soil, often near squash patches, while males and unmated females commonly spend the night inside squash flowers. These bees are active early in the morning, often before other pollinators are awake. Although adults live for only a few weeks, a single female can pollinate thousands of flowers during her lifetime. You can support Squash Bees by planting cucurbits, leaving some bare soil for nesting, and reducing pesticide use.
