Make room, Joro spiders. There’s another invasive species taking over Georgia yards this summer.

The Asian needle ant is becoming infamous as a “medical pest.” That means the ant is not only capable of disrupting the environments they’re occupying but also the people who live in them. Although this type of ant has been around in the U.S. since the 1930s, its spread through the Southeast marks a significant danger for those with allergies to other insects like wasps or yellowjackets, said Dan Suiter, an Orkin Distinguished Professor of Urban Entomology in the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and UGA Extension.

Y’all. We need to have a little group chat. 😅

Georgia Wildlife Network is here to connect the public with LICENSED rehabbers so injured and orphaned wildlife can get into care. Every person answering texts, coordinating placements, and transporting animals is a VOLUNTEER.

We cannot guarantee transport availability. Ever. But especially not right now.

We’ve got animals going here, there, and everywhere. It’s wildlife baby season, the last day of school, a holiday weekend, AND the beginning of summer vacation all rolled into one… which means more animals and fewer people available to help.

Some folks reaching out seem to think we’re parked at the end of the driveway waiting to pick up an animal found 15 minutes ago. 😅

Friend… respectfully… no.

If you find injured or orphaned wildlife, PLEASE plan to transport if at all possible. We need to reserve volunteer transport help for truly critical situations and for people who genuinely have no other options.

Get creative:
• Call a neighbor
• Text your cousin
• Rekindle things with your mother-in-law you haven’t spoken to since the Christmas incident
• Bribe your teenager with Taco Bell
• Call a pet-friendly Uber
• Ask literally anyone with a pulse and a vehicle

Please do everything you can to get the animal where it needs to go (quickly) before requesting transport help. At the same time, don't let it sit there three days without reaching out.

Please remember, you are not calling customer service for a product you overpaid for. We are exhausted wildlife volunteers running on stress, snacks, and enough caffeine to mildly concern our primary care physicians. 😅

Help us help you. The more teamwork we get from the public, the more animals we can save. 💚 THANK YOU!

You're Invited!

The Coastal Resources Division of The Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Georgia Coastal Management Program is hosting a "Build Your Own Rain Barrel Workshop" in partnership with Coca-Cola United!

Did you know: A rain barrel can save most homeowners 2,000 gallons of water each year which can be used for watering gardens, washing cars and other projects around the house?

At the workshop, rain barrel installation, maintenance and safety are discussed, along with instructions for the conversion kit which includes ALL parts needed for installation. Staff will be on hand with the hardware supplies and tools necessary to help you assemble the barrels on-site – ready to take home and use. The conversion kit uses a diverter system which eliminates the need for cutting off gutter downspouts, mosquitoes and over-flow valves.

Registration fee is $45 and includes the 50-gallon drum, instructions and all supplies needed to build your own rain barrel. Please note that if registering for this workshop you must attend the educational presentation and construct your rain barrel at the workshop. Registration will be limited and is available on a first come basis.

Please only register for either the morning or afternoon session, as spots are limited.

📅 When? June 11th, 2026, 9AM-11AM or 1PM-3PM
