Maine Natural Gas (MNG) was established in 1998 to provide the comfortable, clean-burning, versatile and affordable natural gas energy option to communities in Maine. We believe the future growth and health of Maine’s local economy depends, in part, on a more diverse energy supply. MNG is proud to play a role in enhancing Maine’s economy by offering a competitive and clean energy option to homes a

nd businesses. In past years, most of Maine relied primarily on oil or electricity for heating, cooling, water heating and manufacturing. With the construction of two major natural gas transmission lines from Canada through Maine during the late 90’s, all that is changing. By tapping these lines and building safe and reliable local distribution systems, MNG is offering communities access to natural gas for the first time.

Unitil has completed the purchase of Maine Natural Gas Company from Avangrid Enterprises, Inc. The agreement to purchase was first announced on April 1, 2025.

Maine Natural Gas serves approximately 6,300 residential and commercial natural gas customers in nine communities in the Greater Portland region of Maine, as well as the capital city of Augusta. With this acquisition, Unitil serves approximately 213,300 customers throughout Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.

Meissner, Jr., Unitil’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Maine Natural Gas Company brings a dedicated team focused on providing safe, clean, reliable, and affordable energy to customers.
