Tommy Wayne Covington

Tommy Wayne Covington passed away peacefully at NMMC in Tupelo, MS, on September 11, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on December 24, 1944, in Bruce, Mississippi, Tommy dedicated eight years of his life to serving in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he joined the United States Postal Service, where he worked as a postal clerk and processor for more than 20 years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues before retiring.

Tommy was a proud resident of Tupelo, Mississippi, where he cherished his time spent working on his land- a place that filled him with joy and pride. He had a passion for antique cars and was known to be a devoted gun collector, enjoying the buying, selling, and trading of fi****ms. Tommy's infectious jokes and penchant for giving everyone a nickname endeared him to those around him. He was a member of Oak Valley Christian Church in Palmetto, Mississippi, where he grew in his faith.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Sue Tedford Covington, as well as his brothers Ronnie (Selena) Mooneyham of Gulfport, MS, Jeff Covington of Adkins, TX, and Rudy Covington of Adkins, TX; sisters Shirley Caton of Gulfport, MS and Joyce (Eric) Vance of Adkins, TX; step-children, Bobby Prewett Jr. of Pontotoc, MS, Tammy (Matthew) Prather of Starkville, MS, and Tina (Anthony) Lawson of Louisville, KY; step-grandchildren, Casey Nelson, Jordan (Lauren) Prather, Jonah (Madison) Lawson, Ethan (Ashley) Prather, and Jaxon Prewett; along with his step-great grandhchildren, Logan, Lydia, Lakan, Lily Grace, Halle, Lucas, Juliette, Trey, and Ryder; niece, Cheryl (Jerry) Caton, and nephews Jonathan (Julie) Mooneyham, Jeremy Mooneyham, Tim Walls, and Jeff Walls; great-nieces, Jessica (James) Holan and Kathence Mooneyham; great nephews, Landon Mooneyham and Jayden Mooneyham; as well as a special God family, Wayne Walls, Beth, Alex, Grace, Presley, Emma, E.J., and Parker.

A memorial service will be held in celebration of Tommy's life at Oak Valley Christian Church on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 2:00 PM. A family graveside service will be held at a later date with committal in Bruce Cemetery.

Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph Covington; mother, Maxine McCostlin Mooneyham; step-father, Arthel Mooneyham; and sibilings, Frances Covington and John Covington.

Elouise Lafayette

Elouise Lafayette, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother, passed away on September 8, 2026, at the age of 95 at Baptist Memorial Nursing Home in Calhoun City, MS. Born on January 6, 1931, in the Punkin Center Community, MS, Elouise lived a life rich in love, faith, and family.

She was known for her deep faith, often found reading her Bible and gleaning strength and guidance from its pages. Elouise's nurturing spirit extended to her beloved gardens, where she found solace among the flowers she tenderly tended throughout her life.

Elouise is survived by her daughter, Gail Lafayette of Bruce, MS; her brothers, John Ell McCormick of Bruce, MS and Kenneth McCormick of Bruce, MS; and her adoring grandchildren, Kasey and Kalem Lafayette both of Bruce, MS. Each of them will carry forward her memory and the values she instilled in them.

Elouise was preceded in death by her son, Donnie Lafayette, her husband, Tommy Lafayette, her father, Isom McCormick, her mother, Ruthie Ferguson McCormick, two brothers, Eugene McCormick, and Freddie McCormick and a sister, Mavis McCormick Johnson.

A graveside service will be held in her honor at Rocky Mount Cemetery on September 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. with Bro. Darrell Logan officiating. Family and friends are invited to join together in remembrance of a remarkable woman whose kindness and love touched the lives of many. Elouise Lafayette will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever live in the hearts of those who knew her.

Janice Poynor

Janice Poynor, beloved mother, grandmother, and dedicated caregiver, passed away on September 8, 2026, at the age of 66 in her daughter's Big Creek, Mississippi home. Born on June 8, 1960, in Dentontown, Mississippi, Janice touched the lives of many during her lifetime, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion.

For over 30 years, Janice ran her own daycare, Poynor Daycare, where she nurtured and cared for countless children, instilling in them a sense of wonder and joy. Her passion for childcare was only rivaled by her deep love for her family. Janice cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren, Tripp and Harrison Hutchins, always ready with a warm smile and a tender hug. Her laughter filled their days with happiness, and her joy in playing and exploring with them created memories that will be forever treasured.

A long-time member of Lantrip Baptist Church, Janice found strength and community in her faith. She enjoyed nurturing not only the children in her care but also the beautiful flowers in her garden and her unique collection of keepsakes. Her keen eye for beauty and detail reflected her vibrant spirit and zest for life.

Janice is survived by her daughter, Makayla (Griffin) Hutchins of Big Creek, MS, and her cherished grandchildren, Tripp and Harrison Hutchins. She is also survived by her brothers, Jasper Bumgart of Derma, MS, James Ray (Marjorie) Bumgart of Derma, MS, and Thomas Earl (Myra) Bumgart of Vardaman, and a sister, Norma (Keith) Davidson of Bruce, MS. who will remember her fondly as the loving sister who brought light into their lives.

Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Poynor, father, Jasper Bumgart,mother, Nettie Brassfield Bumgart, and a sister, Teresa Morphis.

A funeral service will be held on September 11, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce, Mississippi with Bro. Robert Earl Alexander and Bro. Keith Spratlin officiating. A public viewing will precede the service at 11:00 AM. Janice will be laid to rest on the same day at Memory Memorial Garden with Kelly Davidson, Eric Carr, Scott Coleman, Keith Davidson, Rob Hollis, and Brooks Hutchins serving as pallbearers.

Erma Lou Poynor

Erma Lou Poynor, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who left this world on September 8, 2026, in her Banner, MS. home at the age of 92. Born on January 1, 1934, in Drivers Flat, Mississippi, Erma exemplified resilience and warmth throughout her life, becoming a cherished matriarch in the Banner, MS community.

Erma is survived by four children, Brice (Amanda) Poynor, Dobbie (Krista) Poynor, Leonard (Tracey) Poynor, and Kathy (Riley) Harris all of Banner, MS. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy, including 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored. Her family was her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent together, whether it was fishing, camping, or simply sharing in laughter.

A devoted member of Lantrip Baptist Church, Erma's faith was the foundation of her life. She found joy in reading, playing dominoes, and nurturing the bonds with her family and friends. Her gentle spirit and kind heart touched the lives of many, and her laughter will be dearly missed.

Erma was preceded in death by his husband; Eula Marcell Poynor, father, Les Hillhouse, mother, Tina Johnson Hillhouse, sons, Ottis Poynor and James "Marcell" Poynor, and two brothers, Willie Hillhouse, Eugene Hillhouse.

Visitation will be held at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce on September 10, 2026, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 AM. Following the viewing, a funeral service will take place in the Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 12:00 PM with Bro. Robert Earl Alexander and Bro. Johnny Davidson officiating. She will be laid to rest at Memory Memorial Garden with Tommie Abbott, Danny Barefield, Brad Poynor, Dobbie Poynor, Kaleb Poynor, Leonard Poynor, Keith Stewart, and Kolton Stewart serving as pallbearers. Wayne Norwood and Brice Poynor will be serving as honorary pallbearers.

Edgar Lee Easley

Edgar Lee Easley, who departed this life on September 3, 2026, at the age of 89. He was born on May 15, 1937, in Calhoun County Mississippi, and spent his life serving his community and his faith with unwavering dedication.

Edgar was a beloved minister in the Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as an Elder and contributed to various congregations in the area. His commitment to spiritual guidance and community service was a cornerstone of his life. Throughout his journey, he inspired many with his wisdom, compassion, and steadfast belief in the power of faith.

In addition to his ministry, Edgar enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, particularly raising horses and tending to his farm. He cultivated a love for the land and all its creatures, savoring each moment spent in the great outdoors. Before retiring, he worked in the insurance industry and as a preneed salesman, helping to provide for families and ensuring that their loved ones were cared for.

Edgar proudly served in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Private First Class, a testament to his commitment to his country. He carried this sense of duty and honor into every aspect of his life.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Bonnie Jo Easley, and their three daughters: Rachelle (Andy) Edwards of Banner, MS, Charmen (John) Andersen of Pueblo West CO, and Megan (Michael) Thompson of Saint Augustine, FL. Edgar cherished his role as a father and grandfather, and he is survived by grandchildren Jesse (Shawn) Gilliland, Andi Claire Edwards, Leni Thompson, Ruby Thompson, Forest Shoemaker, and Beau Andersen, as well as a great-grandchild, Thomas Gilliland. He is also survived by his brothers, Hollie Easley and Jim Easley, along with his beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews as well as a host of other family and friends.

Jerry Garlyn Johnson

Jerry Garlyn Johnson, age 85, passed from this earthly life on Friday, September 4, 2026, at his home in Beau Ridge, Oxford, Mississippi. Jerry was born March 28, 1941, in Grenada, Mississippi the son of John Darling Johnson and Eva Anthony Johnson.

Jerry attended The University of Southern Mississippi, where he majored in business. He also continued graduate classes in banking and finance in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1965 he began a long and successful career in banking. Through the years of dedication and leadership, Jerry and his family moved to Bruce in 1980 where he became a part of the town and community serving his community and fellowman. Jerry became branch President of the Bank of Mississippi in Bruce in 1980. Jerry also proudly served his country as a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard, serving in the communications unit and later being honorably discharged from duty after serving his country. His commitment to his community was evident throughout his life, and he also served as President of the Rotary Clubs in both Grenada and Bruce, Mississippi. He lived the Rotary motto, "Service above self, he profits most who serves the best".

Outside of his professional and community life, Jerry enjoyed the simple things that brought him happiness. He loved family, playing golf, fishing for bream, working on the blueberry farm, cooking and growing vegetables. He was also known for brewing his own "life-altering concoctions", a pastime that brought plenty of stories, laughter, and memories to those who knew him. Throughout his life, Jerry was a man of strong faith, where he valued hard work, family, community, and the enjoyment found in a life well lived. Jerry and Ruth attended College Hill Presbyterian Church where they were involved in church ministry. Jerry had a way of making memories along the way and including others in his life. His family will remember not only his accomplishments, but the man behind them.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, John Darling Johnson; his mother, Eva Anthony Johnson; and his first wife, Dianna Brooks Johnson.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a brother. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Carnathan Johnson of Oxford; his children, Jerry Johnson Jr. (Angela) of McComb, Mississippi, and Sabrina Johnson Orr (Mike) of Nashville, Tennessee; John Carnathan (Polly), Robert Carnathan (Carmen), and Leslie Carnathan-Robinson; and his sister, June Johnson of Charleston, South Carolina. His grandchildren include Jerry Johnson Jr.'s children, Britian Howell (Andrew) and Harper Johnson, and Sabrina's children Braxton Orr and Jon Mikel Orr. Jerry also leaves behind four great- grandchildren to carry on his memory and legacy.

A memorial service to honor Jerry's memory and life will be Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Parker Memorial Funeral Home. Pastor Ryan Dean, Alan Cochet and Sam Thamuk will be delivering the tribute to Jerry's life.

Jerry's life and the memories he created will continue to live on through the family and friends who knew and loved him.

James Ellis Simpson

James Ellis Simpson, a beloved father, husband, and community servant, passed away on September 5, 2026, in his hometown of Calhoun City, Mississippi, at the age of 93. Born on August 1, 1933, he was a resident of Calhoun City, where he developed a profound love for his community and its people.

James was a proud graduate of Calhoun City High School, where he completed his education in 1952. He furthered his studies at Northwest Community College, eventually earning an associate's degree that laid the groundwork for a distinguished career in public service.

In 1957, James joined the Memphis Police Department, dedicating 26 years of his life to serving as a police officer, ultimately retiring as a respected sergeant in 1983. His commitment to law enforcement and community welfare was evident in every aspect of his work, earning him the admiration and respect of his colleagues and the community he protected.

Faith was an integral part of James's life. A devoted member of Macedonia Baptist Church, he demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his faith by serving as a Deacon and contributing as a member of the Gideons, promoting the importance of scripture and community service. His spiritual leadership and kindness touched many lives, fostering a strong sense of community and support.

James had a passion for sports, particularly as a devoted fan of Mississippi State University athletics. He cherished every moment spent cheering for his team and enjoyed sharing the joys of football with family and friends. Beyond sports, James had a deep love for music, often found singing joyfully, and he cherished the camaraderie of playing cards and dominoes with loved ones.

James leaves behind his beloved wife, Audie Pauline Simpson, and his cherished daughter, Donna Simpson of Benton, Arkansas.

James was preceded in death by his father. James Carver Simpson, mother, Susie Kimsey Simpson, and a son, James William Simpson.

Visitation will be held at the Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce on September 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM, allowing family, friends, and community members to pay their respects and celebrate a life well-lived. Following the viewing, a funeral service will take place in the chapel at 2:00 PM with Bro. Dwight Brown and Dr. Michael Baker officiating. James will be laid to rest in Oak Springs Cemetery with Mike Humphrey, Lynn Rogers, Robert Simpson, James Warren, and Bobby Weaver serving as pallbearers.

Myrl "Lynn" Bryant

Myrl Lynn Bryant, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away at her home in Carthage, MS, on August 30, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on June 3, 1951, in Vardaman, MS, Lynn will be remembered for her warmth, creativity, and unwavering spirit. She graduated from Vardaman High School in 1969 and later obtained an Associate's Degree before embarking on her career.

Lynn dedicated many years of her life to Bell South Telephone Co. as a collections agent before retiring. She also retired from the Mississippi Military Department, where she served as an administrative assistant. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Brandon, MS, where she found joy and community. Lynn's love for reading, traveling, and engaging in arts and crafts enriched the lives of those around her, as did her vibrant personality and infectious laughter.

On December 26, 1970, Lynn married the love of her life, Michael Don Bryant. Together, they raised three sons: Jerry Lee (Clara) Bryant of Big Springs, TX, John Paul (Stephanie) Bryant of Carthage, MS, and Michael Edward (Rachel) Bryant of Elgin, OK. Lynn's legacy continues through her grandchildren, Damion (Katy) Bryant, Sam Bryant, Maggie (Nick) Wright, David (Monte) Bryant, Taylor Bryant, Katelynn Bryant, Kara Leigh Bryant, and Leighanna Bryant, as well as her five cherished great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Jo Ann Dye of Calhoun City, MS, and her brother, Leroy Delbert (Vonne) Edwards of Carrollton, MS.

A visitation will take place from 10:30 AM until 11:00 AM at the Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Vardaman, MS. Following the visitation, a memorial service in honor of Lynn Bryant will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM with her sons, Bro. Michael Bryant and Bro. John Paul Bryant officiating.

As we remember Lynn's life, we find comfort in the words of Proverbs 3:5 (KJV): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."

Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Vola Edwards and one sister, Janice Robles.

Vickie Lane Hayles

Vickie Lane Hayles, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away at her home on August 31, 2026, at the age of 71. Vickie was born on October 29, 1954, in Bruce, Mississippi, and spent her life in Houlka, Mississippi.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Carla McKinney of Houlka, MS, and one grandchild, Johnathan Wayne (MeMe) McKinney. Vickie will be remembered as a terrific mother and grandmother by her daughter and grandchild.

Vickie spent many years working as a nurse's assistant, at Walmart, and was self-employed.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Vickie loved reading and was a true movie buff. One of her favorite things to do was mowing her yard. Vickie attended church at Sarepta Baptist Church, where she found fellowship and purpose.

A visitation will be held at Parker Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Funeral services for Vickie will begin at 2:00 PM. Following the service, Vickie will be laid to rest at Memory Memorial Garden in Bruce, MS.

Vickie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Hayles; father, Albert Martin; mother, Eva Martin; and sister, Norma Cain.
