Nest After Dark!

In this week's installment of Nest After Dark, our trail cam captured video of one of the juvenile Black vultures taking flight! You can tell it is one of the juveniles, because of the tufts of down still present on it's neck! The vulture may have been startled by something on nearby Texas Oak Trail or may have just been getting some exercise! Now that the vultures are flying, they will fledge their nest in the very near future! This may be our last nest update for the year, but hopefully, their mother found this area to be a good nest site and will make another here next year! Stay tuned for more content!

Vulture Cam!

In this week's installment of Vulture Cam, our Trail-Cam captured video of the mother Black vulture feeding her chicks! As you can see, they are hardly chicks anymore and have most of their adult plumage with very little visible down left. They are very close to fledging, and while not captured in video, both chicks have been seen flying away from their nest! In the next 1-3 weeks, they will be mature enough to begin finding their own food. This may be one of our last Vulture Cam updates of this year! Hopefully, with our signage and precautions we have taken, their mother will again find this location ideal again to make a nest and we get to see this incredible journey again next year! Stay tuned for more Vulture Cam updates in the future!

Curious what flowers are still blooming at the park? We still have tons of wildflowers here at the beginning of June including lemon beebalm (Monarda citriodora), American basketflower (Plectocephalus americanus), upright prairie coneflower (Ratibida columnifera), and stiff greenthread (Thelesperma filifolium). Take a hike with us on National Trails Day and smell the flowers!

ANSWER: Balsam gourd (Ibervillea lindheimeri), also called Snake Apple!
What's that plant? Can you identify what this odd vine plant is that we found growing in the park? We'll give you a few hints!
1. It is closely related to cucumbers and squash.
2. It is a Texas native, found in Oklahoma and New Mexico as well.
3. While in the same family as some delicious vegetables, this plant is not palatable to humans, although not poisonous either.
Put your guess in the comments! We'll provide the answer tomorrow morning!
