The Power of Prayer and Spiritual Warfare
It is important that as we go throughout our day we remind ourselves that our battle is not against people or situations, it’s against demonic forces. Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
In 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 the Word says, “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.”
Prayer is not a chore. Prayer is an honor. It is an honor to sit at the feet of Jesus. It is an honor to walk boldly into the throne room of heaven and speak to the Lord directly. Prayer is your weapon in this war.
We live in a time when many attacks are coming against our country, against the church, and against Christian leaders who boldly stand for the Lord. But we must remember that we are not waging war against people. We are waging war against witchcraft, against demonic forces, and against spiritual wickedness. If you lose sight of this, you will end up fighting individuals instead of standing firm in the authority God has given you.
Ephesians 6:13-17 tells us to put on the whole armor of God. Fasten on the belt of truth. Truth is not what your mind fantasizes or what the world says. Truth is what the Word of God declares, and it must always rise above your circumstances. Put on the breastplate of righteousness. Righteousness guards your heart. Put on the shoes of the gospel of peace. Wherever you go today, whether it is Walmart, Home Depot, the barber shop, or anywhere in Brownwood, you carry the presence of the Prince of Peace. Every step you take proclaims the kingdom of heaven. Be ready in season and out of season to share the gospel. Take up the shield of faith to extinguish the fiery darts of the evil one. Put on the helmet of salvation. Know with certainty that you are saved, not by your works but by the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. The sword is sharp, living, and active. Keep it in your mouth daily so you can strike with it when the enemy comes.
This is exactly how Jesus Himself overcame temptation. In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness and tempted three times. Each time He responded to the devil with the Word of God. Finally He rebuked him, and the devil fled.
That same authority lives in you. You have the power to rebuke temptation and demonic forces in the name of Jesus Christ. Prayer activates that authority. Prayer is where you gain the strength to stand firm, to resist, and to conquer.
Let us walk boldly today, armored in truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, peace, and the Word of God. And let us never take lightly the honor of prayer.
