At the May City Council meeting, Council approved an increase in base rates for both water and sewer services. Due to rising material and repair costs, this adjustment is a necessary step to help strengthen the fund balance for these utilities. Base fees play a critical role in supporting ongoing maintenance and infrastructure repairs, ensuring the continued reliability of these essential services.

Reminder to get your Summer Explorer registrations in by tomorrow, May 15. Some of the programs need to know how many to expect. We are very excited for this new approach to keeping our youth active in during the summer.

The City of Brownton has been awarded a $192,655 Community Tree Planting Grant through the State of Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources’ Urban & Community Forestry program. This project will be completed by June 30, 2027.

The grant will support the removal and replacement of 115 ash trees located on city property and within the city right-of-way. This work directly addresses the significant public safety risk posed by the emerald ash borer (EAB), which has compromised the structural integrity of ash trees throughout the community.

Over the next couple of months, the City will finalize contractor selection and service agreements, confirm the tree species and stock list with the DNR for approval, and obtain necessary permissions from residents for work proposed on private property where applicable. The City will also coordinate with residents regarding future maintenance responsibilities and prepare detailed maps identifying all ash trees scheduled for removal.

Tree removal activities are expected to begin after October 1, following the EAB flight season. Replanting efforts will begin after removals are completed, continuing the restoration phase of the project.

At its Wednesday night meeting, the Council voted to draft an ordinance that will allow residents to have "backyard chickens." This does not mean that the Council has approved allowing chickens, but it does allow the drafting of an ordinance that would address many of the concerns that people have raised about allowing chickens in the city limits, such as noise, odor, quality of building materials, limiting the number of birds, etc.

A Council Member, the City Clerk and the City Attorney will review ordinances from other communities and draft one that would be suitable for Brownton's needs. That draft ordinance will be presented to the Council in the future for its approval. If the Council approves the ordinance, a public hearing will be held for public input before its final adoption.

The Council will continue to update the community through this page and other outlets as the ordinance progresses through the process.

UPDATE-UPDATE-UPDATE-See new dates.

Public Works will be flushing hydrants on Thursday, May 14th and Friday, May 15th.

1-Try to avoid doing laundry and using hot water during this period to prevent staining clothes, as sediment can cause temporary discolored water.
2-Run cold water taps for a few minutes to clear it out, preferably from a bathtub or faucet without an aerator.
3-Check faucet screens for trapped particles if pressure seems low.
