Cameron County is aware of the confirmed presence of New World Screwworm in Zavala County, Texas.

We have been actively coordinating with state, federal, and regional partners in preparation for the possibility that New World Screwworm could reappear in the United States. That possibility is now a reality, and we are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

We encourage all South Texans, particularly livestock owners and pet owners, to remain vigilant and take steps to protect their animals, and treat and cover any opens wounds and sores.

If you suspect a case of New World Screwworm, contact the Texas Animal Health Commission immediately at 1-800-550-8242.

At today’s Commissioners’ Court meeting, we had the privilege of recognizing outstanding leadership from both community members and students across Cameron County.

We proudly honored Rene Capistran of Noble Builders for leading the collaborative, multi-organization effort to construct a new home for Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2410. His dedication and commitment to our veterans are helping create a lasting legacy for those who have served our country.

We also celebrated the achievements of student leaders at Brownsville ISD’s Daniel Breeden Elementary and San Benito CISD’s Sullivan Environmental Science Academy for earning designation as Texas 4-H Champion Schools.

This distinguished recognition was awarded to only nine schools statewide this year, and we are especially proud that two of those schools are right here in Cameron County.

Congratulations to all those recognized today for their leadership, service, and commitment to making our community stronger.

This Memorial Day, Cameron County honors and remembers the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this holiday weekend, we encourage our community to take a moment to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who gave everything in defense of our country.

In observance of Memorial Day, Cameron County office buildings will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, and will resume normal operations on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

Hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and continues through November 30.

Ahead of the six-month season, Cameron County Emergency Management hosted a Hurricane Preparedness Kick-Off Meeting, bringing together local, regional, and state agencies, nonprofit and volunteer organizations, emergency response teams, and community partners to ensure everyone has the most up-to-date information ahead of any potential severe weather threats.

Thank you to the dozens of organizations and partners in attendance that took the time to connect, coordinate, and prepare together. In the event a hurricane or tropical system impacts Cameron County or South Texas, collaboration and communication will remain critical to protecting lives, property, and livelihoods across our communities.

Natural disasters do not follow city limits or county lines, which is why strong regional coordination is more important than ever. By working together before a storm approaches, we can ensure a faster, safer, and more effective response when it matters most.

Residents are also encouraged to begin preparing now by creating a hurricane preparedness plan for your family, loved ones, home, and business. Taking proactive steps today can make a major difference during an emergency.

With the school year coming to an end, I wanted to wish my C.A.R.E. class at Ortiz Elementary a happy and safe summer break with cupcakes and signing their yearbooks!

I also had the opportunity to visit another class as well, and it was great getting to spend time with so many bright students and educators. Seeing their energy, creativity, and excitement for learning always makes these visits special.

I hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved summer filled with fun, rest, and new memories before the next school year begins!

As the academic year comes to a close, we wanted to recognize three Brownsville ISD schools for achieving “Healthy Campus” status through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

Today, we presented proclamations to Annie S. Putegnat Elementary, A.A. Champion Elementary, and Daniel Breeden Elementary for promoting healthy habits among students and families alike. From encouraging nutritious eating to growing their own vegetables and raising chickens, these schools are helping teach the importance of healthy lifestyles at an early age.

As students head into summer break, we hope these healthy habits continue so they can keep growing big, healthy, and strong throughout the summer months.

Today, the four Rio Grande Valley county judges, alongside state partners and industry experts, held a joint press conference to emphasize the importance of awareness and vigilance regarding the New World screwworm and its potential impact on livestock, wildlife, pets, and other warm-blooded animals.

While the closest reported cases remain across the border in Mexico, our border counties are proactively preparing and coordinating with partners should the threat reach Texas.

The New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae infest open wounds in animals, posing a serious threat to livestock and animal health. The closest confirmed cases have been identified in the Mexican state of Coahuila, approximately 119 miles from the Texas border.

Our message is clear: we are not waiting for a confirmed case to take action. Through collaboration and preparedness, we are committed to containing and stopping the spread should a case be identified in Cameron County or anywhere in Texas in order to protect Texas livestock and animals.

If you suspect a case of New World screwworm, please immediately contact the Texas Animal Health Commission at 1-800-550-8242.

Attached are resources to help identify New World screwworm and recognize symptoms in livestock and animals.
