CCHC - Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee Civil War Sesquicentennial The Official Cameron County Historical Committee honoring the American Civil War Sesquicentennial.

05/13/2015

Today marks the second and last day of the Battle of Palmito Hill. With this battle concluded, the nation now sets down the path of unity and freedom for everyone. May we learn the hard lessons of our nation’s past, so that we never forget the sacrifices, which were made. Let us not forget all the men and women of this nation, who has ensured the rights and liberties, which we presently enjoy.

The Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee and the Cameron County Historical Commission, would like to thank all our volunteers; locally and nationally, and to all our partners who help make this commemoration a reality. Also, we would like to thank all of you have have supported both the committee and commission during the sesquicentennial.

May GOD bless Cameron County, Texas, and the United States of America.

Although Texas does not possess iconic Civil War battlefields, such as Gettysburg or Antietam, the Lone Star State does include a wealth of sites that are important to telling a complete history of the Civil War. A very special historical observance of one such site—Palmito Ranch Battlefield National Historic Landmark, the “last land battle” of the Civil War, fought on May 12–13, 1865—will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12, about 13 miles east of Brownsville on Highway 4 (Boca Chica Boulevard).

Led by the Cameron County Historical Commission’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, a solemn ceremony will take place at the battlefield from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. For more information about tomorrow’s programming, check out the Palmito Hill 150th page, or contact the Cameron Sesquicentennial Committee directly at the first link below.

Since 2008, the THC’s Military Sites Program has coordinated Park Day at Palmito Ranch Battlefield, and has undertaken several grant-funded projects associated with the battle, including research studies; a brochure (cover pictured; second link below); an onsite radio broadcast repeater system; restoration of historical markers; and new signage, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s latest successful project that placed a 360-degree interpretive platform in the core-battlefield area. Learn more about these projects at the THC’s Palmito Ranch Battlefield webpage (third link).

A great new trail which has been working on is about to open up.

This community-based project has developed a virtual “tour” that provides a conceptual “walk?

This might be a good movie to go see. Oddly enough, it is around the time of the Battle of New Market's 150. It should be good.

The is the true story of young VMI cadets pulled into the Civil War and fighting against all odds in the midst of America's deadliest conflict.

Our latest blog post, “Sesquicentennial Salute: Cameron County to Commemorate Civil War Anniversary,” explains how a committee of the Cameron County Historical Commission is working hard to honor a very special historical observance. The Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee is preparing for a week-long commemoration of next year’s 150th anniversary of the Battle of Palmito Ranch, the last land battle of the Civil War.
