Haywood County TN Genealogy Genies

Haywood County TN Genealogy Genies The Genies are a volunteeer organization who assist researchers with their family histories in Haywood County, TN. Moses.

Some requests may be published in our Genie Column in the Brownsville States Graphic to assist you with your search. The Genie Room is located within the Elma Ross Public Library in Brownsville, TN. Genealogy Room beginning:
Reese Moses (volunteer extraordinaire)approached Ramona Stevenson
(now-retired library director) with the offer to volunteer her time for

genealogy when the library was still at the Carnegie location. Reese used a
corner in the basement to do genealogical research. When the new building
was being planned, Genealogy got a room. The Elma Ross Public Library was built in 1992 and the Genealogy Room was
named after renowned researcher Reese Moses in 2002. Reese was an
awesome asset to Haywood County researchers for approximately 18 years
until her passing. In her absence, the four current Genies have continued assisting others
where she left off, but all of us together have not been able to keep up with
the work load accomplished by Ms.

State Archivists to Visit Brownsville in Search of Civil War Memorabilia
For Immediate Release from the Tennessee Secretary of State:

Representatives from the Tennessee State Library and Archives and the Tennessee State Museum will be in Brownsville on September 9th and 10th to record and digitize Civil War memorabilia owned by local residents for an exhibit titled "Looking Back: The Civil War in Tennessee."

Archivists will be at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center, 121 Sunny Hill Cove in Brownsville, on September 9th from 12 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and September 10th from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. During that time, they invite area residents to bring in original photographs, documents and other artifacts related to the Civil War.

The archivists will scan or take digital photographs of the materials, some of which will be featured in the exhibit, located online at www.tncivilwar150.org. The archivists will not actually take possession of the items from their owners.

Individuals may call (615) 741-1883 or e-mail [email protected] to schedule a reservation with the archivists. Reservation forms and available times may be found on the State Library and Archives' section of the Office of the Secretary of State web site at http://tn.gov/tsla/cwtn/cwtn_events.htm.

"This is an important project for the Tennessee State Library and Archives," Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. "The Civil War was a major event in our state’s history, so we need to take appropriate steps to make sure these treasures are properly preserved for future generations."

Attendees at the event will receive copies of the digital photographs and tips on how to preserve their Civil War memorabilia.

Archivists plan to visit as many of Tennessee’s 95 counties as possible in search of material for the exhibit, which commemorates the Civil War's 150th anniversary.

Media coverage of the archiving work is encouraged.

Media contact: Blake Fontenay, Communications Director, (615) 253-2668 or [email protected]

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War (2011-2015), the Tennessee State Library and Archives is sending teams of archivists and conservators to communities across Tennessee.
