Meet the Recruits: Landon Wood

For Landon Wood, the fire service is about more than a job. It is a chance to “protect lives, support the community, and make a real difference in critical moments.” He stated, "Brownsburg Fire Territory stood out to me for its strong commitment to community service, professionalism, and continuous training. It has a reputation for teamwork and high standards, making it a great fire department."

Before joining the fire service, Landon’s favorite job was cutting grass, but now he is looking forward to building his skills, learning from experienced instructors, and pushing himself both physically and mentally during recruit class. He is excited to be part of a team that works together, supports each other, and serves the community with pride.

Around the firehouse, Landon says his go-to meal will be hibachi chicken and fried rice. He is a coffee guy, enjoys hiking, fishing, sports, and spending time with friends and family. Something you may not expect? Landon sings at events sometimes.

When asked what he fears most about recruit class, his answer was simple: “Death by PowerPoint.”

His advice to his younger self is to “be a sponge” when it comes to advice from parents and mentors, because “they have the real perspectives to learn from, even when you think you have it all figured out.”

Favorite movie? Fury, because of its realism, brotherhood, leadership, and sacrifice under pressure. And if Landon could have any superpower, he would choose teleportation.

Welcome to Brownsburg Fire Territory, Landon!

On March 24, 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Engine 131 and Medic 131 responded to a report of an unconscious individual experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency.

Upon arrival, personnel quickly recognized that the patient was suffering from a critical condition requiring immediate intervention. Paramedic La Lond assumed the role of lead clinician and demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout the incident. Her calm demeanor, decisive decision-making, and ability to direct personnel under pressure ensured that the patient received timely and coordinated care during a rapidly evolving emergency.

Paramedic White served in a key supporting role, utilizing his advanced training and experience to assist with complex medical procedures and patient stabilization efforts. Together, the paramedics worked seamlessly to provide the highest level of prehospital care available.

Supporting the paramedics were Firefighter Kish, Firefighter Ballew, Firefighter Edie, Lieutenant Whitt, and Probationary Firefighter Sturgill. Each member played an important role in patient care and scene operations, demonstrating outstanding teamwork, professionalism, and attention to detail. Their ability to anticipate needs, communicate effectively, and perform under pressure contributed significantly to the success of the incident.

Particularly noteworthy was the performance of Probationary Firefighter Sturgill, who was responding to his first major medical emergency. Despite the high-stress nature of the call, he remained calm, focused, and professional, carrying out his responsibilities with confidence and composure.

Most importantly, every member on scene worked together as a cohesive team. Their collective expertise, professionalism, and commitment to serving others exemplify the highest standards of the Brownsburg Fire Territory and the fire service profession.

In recognition of their swift actions, exceptional teamwork, and dedication to providing outstanding care to a member of our community during a critical emergency, Paramedic La Lond, Paramedic White, Firefighter Kish, Firefighter Ballew, Firefighter Edie, Lieutenant Whitt, and Probationary Firefighter Sturgill were awarded a Unit Commendation by Chief Alcorn and Chief Schlageter.

🚒 Meet the Recruits: Nathan Miller 🚒

This Friday, we're introducing Recruit Nathan Miller, who says joining the fire service was an easy choice because it's "the best job in the world." He loves that firefighters get to make a real difference in their community. For Nathan, Brownsburg was the perfect fit because he "practically grew up in the firehouses" and many BFT members have known him since he was "itty bitty."

Before recruit school, Nathan worked nights driving a forklift at the airport. While being "practically nocturnal" wasn't always easy, he says the people he worked with made it a great experience.

When it comes to firehouse meals, Nathan is bringing pasta to the table, along with a salmon recipe he proudly claims is better than anything he's had at a restaurant. Outside of work, you'll find him playing strategy and building video games, reading fantasy novels, or enjoying a good romance story. In fact, he admits he gets pretty invested in the characters and finds himself cheering for the relationships to work out.

Nathan is most looking forward to recruit school because he wants to become a better person. After watching his brother go through an academy, he saw firsthand how it helped him grow stronger, smarter, and more mature. His biggest challenge will be staying out of his own head and remembering that nobody has to be perfect.

A fan of Tolkien's work and the Hobbit movies, Nathan would choose teleportation as his superpower so he could travel the world and see all the amazing places it has to offer.

Please join us in welcoming Recruit Nathan Miller to the Brownsburg Fire Territory family! 🚒🔥

🌧️🚨 Water Safety Reminder from Brownsburg Fire Territory 🚨🌧️

With the recent heavy rains and flooding throughout the area, Brownsburg Fire Territory wants to remind everyone to stay alert and stay safe around high water.

⚠️ Turn Around, Don’t Drown ⚠️
Just a few inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet, and floodwaters can easily sweep away a vehicle. Never drive through flooded roadways, even if the water appears shallow. You may not be able to see washed out roads, debris, or dangerous currents underneath.

💧 Water Safety Tips:
• Never drive around barricades or through closed roads
• Keep children away from creeks, drainage ditches, and flooded areas
• Avoid walking through standing or moving water
• Be extra cautious at night when flooding is harder to see
• Move to higher ground if flooding begins near your home
• Slow down during heavy rain and increase following distance

Stay safe, Brownsburg.

🚒 On Friday, Brownsburg Fire Territory’s B-Shift crews from Ladder 131 and Engine 131 were invited to Delaware Trails Elementary for Field Day. To say we had a blast would be an understatement! 🚒

We got to show off the trucks, play games with the students… and maybe spray a little water along the way. 💦😎

Because let’s be honest...firefighters are really just big kids with bigger toys.

Thank you to the staff and students at Delaware Trails for having us out! We loved seeing all the smiles, hearing the laughs, and answering the great questions from the kids throughout the day.

We appreciate the opportunity to spend time with our community and make some great memories! 🚒❤️

🚒Meet the Recruits🚒

Today, we’re excited to introduce Jared “Milkshake” Michalke!

Jared is joining the fire service because he wants to help people, be part of something bigger than himself, and build that brotherhood that comes with being part of a firehouse family.

Brownsburg is already home for Jared. He has lived here for the past five years, and his dad has served as a Captain with Brownsburg Fire Territory for 29 years. Jared says his dad has always spoken highly of the department, and he is proud to join a department that is so respected across the state.

Before this, Jared worked as a heavy equipment operator doing soil stabilization. From concrete trucks to rollers, graders, stabilizers, and water trucks, Jared has spent the last several years running equipment and learning the value of hard work.

Around the firehouse, Jared says he enjoys cooking and plans to bring plenty of high-protein meals to the table, including stir fry, chicken with potatoes and green beans, chicken and broccoli alfredo, teriyaki beef and rice, and anything cooked on the grill.

A few things to know about Jared:

He loves playing card and board games, enjoys golfing, cooking, and spending time with his girlfriend, who is pregnant with their baby girl.

He is most looking forward to learning the firefighting side of the job, extrication tools, fire behavior, and how to safely operate as part of a team.

What does he fear most about recruit class? Physical training.

When asked "coffee or energy drinks?" Jared prefers java.

Advice to his younger self?

“Try to get into the fire service sooner. Best job you can get in the world.”

Favorite movie?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon — because of the action and storyline.

And if Jared could have one superpower, it would be the ability to keep his stamina and strength and never get tired.

Please help us welcome Jared “Milkshake” Michalke to Brownsburg Fire Territory!
