Some towns leave you with the feeling that nothing much has changed, and that’s not a bad thing. A courthouse square, a few sturdy blocks of storefronts, and streets that still hint at the days when people came downtown to take care of business and catch up on the news.

Brookville has that lived-in look that comes from being around a long time and not trying too hard to impress anybody. You can almost picture the old traffic, the shoppers, the men in work clothes, the ladies coming out of the shops with parcels under their arms.

It makes me think of the towns we all passed through on family trips, where you slowed down without meaning to. I’m glad places like this are still here to remind us what a real downtown used to feel like.
