For many who remember September 11, 2001, the day began with an image that remains vivid 25 years later: a brilliantly clear early fall morning and blue skies that gave no hint of what was to come. Within hours, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C., and the crash of a fourth hijacked airliner near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, had killed nearly 3,000 people and changed the nation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was among the many organizations called upon to respond.

LAKE UPDATE 9/4/26: The lake is back to Summer pool. Work crews including DNR, marina staff and other local facilities worked hard this past week cleaning up and addressing impacts from the recent August flooding event. Labor Day weekend spent at your favorite Brookville Lake, plus wearing your lifejacket and being safe around the water, equals fun times ahead! We thought you might enjoy seeing two comparison videos of the flow today that is 100 c.f.s. vs. what we were doing at max release of 6,300 c.f.s. just a little over a week ago (posted in comments). When paddling on rivers, steer clear of commercial vessels. 🚢 They have the right of way in a navigation channel.

Human-powered vessels should avoid commercial traffic. Boats don’t have brakes, and it takes an average of ¾ to 1½ miles for a towboat pushing barges to stop. ⚠️

Give commercial vessels plenty of room and stay safe on the water! 🌊

LAKE UPDATE: Brookville Lake remains slightly above summer pool as the area continues to recover from the recent flooding event. Summer pool is 748 feet (NGVD29). As of 6 a.m. on Aug. 28, 2026, the lake level was 752.09 feet (NGVD29). The lake level is expected to continue declining throughout the weekend and into early next week. Please use caution: Flood debris and other materials may be present on both land and in the water. Work crews, including DNR, marina staff and other local facilities, are working to clean up and address impacts from flooding.
