Today we celebrate our 251st anniversary!

George Washington appointed the first engineer officers of the Army on June 16, 1775, during the American Revolution, and engineers have served in combat in all subsequent American wars. The Army established the Corps of Engineers as a separate, permanent branch on March 16, 1802, and gave the engineers responsibility for founding and operating the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Since then the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has responded to changing defense requirements and played an integral part in the development of the country. Happy birthday to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army Engineer Regiment, and thank you to all who have contributed to our efforts for the Nation.

⚠️🌊 Drowning doesn’t look like it does in the movies.

It can happen in as little as 30 seconds for children and 60 seconds for many adults, often silently—even close to shore.

👀 Around 40% of drownings are witnessed. Most of the time, others may be nearby but don’t realize someone is in trouble.

Learn the 4 signs of drowning:
🔹 Head back
🔹 Mouth open
🔹 Not yelling or calling for help
🔹 Arms slapping the water surface (not waving around)

🦺 Most importantly, always wear a life jacket to avoid an accident becoming a tragedy.

✅ Use a marine CO detector
✅ Seat children in the forward-most seating on a boat

Today, May 31, is National Dam Safety Awareness Day! 🌊

Dam safety programs, like the one from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, help federal, state, and local stakeholders responsible for dams monitor them and follow best safety practices.

USACE is responsible for more than 750 dams nationwide, contributing to the reduction of flood risk for 15 million people and $950 billion in property. 🏠

📢Special shoutout to the Louisville District’s outstanding dam safety team, whose expertise and dedication help ensure our projects continue operating safely and effectively for the communities we serve. Their hard work plays a critical role in reducing risk and protecting lives and property throughout the region. 💪
