On 07-18-24, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call in reference to Richard Biggs (father) and Abigail Biggs (12 year old daughter) who were homeless and needed assistance finding resources. Abigail expressed that she was not feeling well from the heat of the day. They have been sleeping outdoors for an extended period of time and had several bug bites. The Department of Children & Families provided them with some contact information for resources. Most of the resources were outside of the county due to limited local resources.

The City of Brooksville Fire Department was called to the scene to check on Abigail as a precaution. No medical concerns were noted. At this point, Brooksville Fire Department firefighters, Mike Gruetzmacher, James Webb, and Erik Oritz, along with Deputy M. Beebe started to develop a plan to help. With the heat index hitting triple digits for the last several weeks and near daily thunderstorms, they knew that more help was needed.

The empathy and generosity started with law enforcement giving the family some cold drinks and snacks. The firefighters purchased some rain gear, additional drinks, and bug spray. The firefighters and Deputy Beebe agreed to transport them to a local hotel, where they paid for a two-night stay for Richard and Abigail. The firefighters made arrangements to have a local restaurant deliver a hot meal to their hotel room. A small amount of cash was also provided by law enforcement.

A local resource list was provided for continued care to help them rebuild their lives. Both of them were grateful for the assistance. The father tried to decline the assistance throughout the encounter and was left in tears.
