I was 10 years old on 9/11/2001. In 2002, interfaith leaders I now work alongside, including Rabbi Ellen Lippmann and Sister Debbie Almontaser, came together to host the first Children of Abraham Peace Walk.

At the Islamic Center of NYC during this year’s walk, I shared a few words about what their work has taught us: our bond is unbreakable.

“When we come together across faiths and communities, we deny those who seek to divide us the very thing they depend on: our fear of one another.”

Twenty-five years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives taken and the families who have carried that loss for a quarter century.

We remember the first responders and workers who saved lives and who rebuilt our city.

Our responsibility is not just to remember our loss, but to choose to be bound together.

Yet again, at today’s Council Stated meeting, I rose to speak out against the disgusting anti-Muslim hate some of my colleagues are spewing this week, to call on the rest of this body to condemn it.

Today, we introduced Intro 1037 and Resolution 623 to expand deliverista bathroom access and ensure bodily autonomy for people with disabilities.

Intro 1037 would require NYC to build 30 public bathrooms within the next 5 years, in conversation with deliveristas and the local community.

And, it would require the city to conduct a study aimed at incentivizing businesses to open existing restrooms to the public.

Deliveristas spend their days navigating our streets to keep us fed. They deserve safe, reliable access to bathrooms while they work.

More public bathrooms = a better NYC for everyone.

Res. 623 calls on NY State to enact S.3357/A.1582, sponsored by State Senator Gustavo Rivera and Assemblymember Jessica GonzÃĄlez-Rojas, which would BAN forced sterilization of people with disabilities.

Right now in New York, a court can authorize the sterilization of a person deemed unable to consent, without that person’s own informed consent.

This practice has roots in the early 20th-century eugenics movement, which deemed people with disabilities “unfit” to reproduce. Under eugenics laws and policies, an estimated 60,000–70,000 people were forcibly sterilized across the US.

Nearly 1 in 6 New Yorkers lives with a disability. Protecting bodily autonomy and ensuring that people with disabilities have control over their own reproductive decisions is a fundamental right.

S.3357/A.1582 would prohibit health care providers from performing sterilization procedures without the informed consent of the person receiving the procedure.

Every person, regardless of disability, deserves dignity, bodily autonomy, and the freedom to make fundamental decisions about their own body and family.

đŸ“ĸDo you live, work, or go to school in Prospect Park South? đŸ“ĸ Help shape the South of Prospect Neighborhood Plan to reshape parts of Coney Island and McDonald Avenues focusing on housing, local businesses, streets, and public spaces.

1) If you haven’t yet, complete the South of Prospect survey

2) Attend the NYC Dept of City Planning Insights and Visioning Workshop, on Tuesday, September 15 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at PS 889, 21 Hinckley Place. This workshop is an opportunity for you to learn about the proposal, ask questions, and share what you would like the plan to address!

3) If you can’t make the in person workshop, attend the virtual workshop on Zoom, on Wednesday, September 23 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM
