Old Stone House of Brooklyn Built on traditional Lenape land, site of the Battle of Brooklyn on August 27, 1776, and home of the

The Old Stone House Building is a reconstruction of the 1699 Vechte-Cortelyou House. Located in Washington Park, on the border of Park Slope and Gowanus in Brooklyn, it marks the place where the original Dutch farmstead stood and the culminating engagement of the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn took place. It also commemorates the birthplace of the Brooklyn Dodgers. It is a Historic House Trust of New York City site, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBIT
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Land, curated by Jeremy Dennis, opens on September 16th. Then join Ma’s House artists for a reunion artist talk on the 27th.

CLASSES and TALKS
Angel Martinez Lombardo hosts “Botany of Colonization.” Learn how the colonial era shaped American gardens and landscapes.

Mark A. Schneider returns with his civics class. This month focuses on political campaigns and GOTV.

The Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing Collective, which brings together Lunáapeew/Lenape communities who have been displaced across Turtle Island (North America) are hosting the Third United Lenape/Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park.

The Collective needs our help to meet their $50,000 fundraising goal for this - second Pow Wow held in Prospect Park since 1972, and the third ever Lenape Pow Wow in New York City.

Take a second to watch this bee working tirelessly in the Washington Park gardens, and listen to the haunting opening of Vespa: A Girl and Her Pet Wasp.

Join us, Saturday, September 12, from 2 PM - 3 PM, for a new interactive opera by Don DiNicola - FREE AND OUTDOORS in the Gardens surrounding Old Stone House.

A young girl and her pet wasp lead some friends on a journey into the mysterious world of insects. Their alarming and hilarious encounters cause the humans to re-evaluate their place in the natural world.
A family friendly outdoor opera concert by the pollinator garden at Old Stone House. Get ready to chirp, hum and buzz along. Come dressed as your favorite insect!

Sip and Flower Arrange! This Thursday, September 10, 2026, 5:00 PM at Old Stone House & Washington Park in Brooklyn.

Tickets are on Eventbrite (link in bio) and include all materials for a beautiful bouquet from the Washington Park Gardens!

Director of Gardens, Sam Lewis, is a knowledgeable and charming host. His floral classes are always a good time and not to be missed.

We here at the Old Stone House have had a very busy month. We’ll be taking the next few days off.

If you’re waiting for a call or email back, please be patient. We’re back online beginning Friday, September 4th.

There’s one more weekend to see our “Breaking the Law” exhibit. We’re hosting usual open hours this Labor Day weekend. The best times to visit are:

After the Maryland 400’s brave stand at the Old Stone House, a massive storm stopped the British from pursuing the Americans further. British commanders thought they had trapped the Americans on the shores of Brooklyn, but they didn’t count on the might of the Marblehead Mariners! On August 29th, 1776, this strong regiment of Massachusetts fishermen rowed across the East River as many as eleven times, ensuring that the entire American army reached safety. When the storm cleared the next morning, the British found that the Americans had disappeared. Though the rebels may have lost the Battle of Brooklyn, they survived to fight another day.
