We had such a meaningful time at our Pre-Rosh Hashanah Challah Bake with Charlene — an evening filled with connection, community, and, of course, plenty of challah! 💛

Charlene, thank you for leading us in hafrashat challah, teaching us some of your best braiding techniques, and sharing beautiful words of Torah that have us heading into the new year with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to bringing more chesed into our lives and our community.

The Ohel Family Center in Lawrence is a space built for community. By day, the Center is home to Ohel’s Day Habilitation program, providing individuals with developmental disabilities opportunities to build skills, foster independence, and connect with others. By night, it transforms into a gathering place for families and the broader community, bringing people together for meaningful experiences just like this one.

This Rosh Hashanah begins on September 11—25 years after a day that forever changed our country and so many lives.

In a special Rosh Hashanah reflection, Ohel CEO David Mandel considers what the anniversary of 9/11 can teach us about trauma, resilience, and the difficult work of moving forward—not by returning to who we once were, but by building meaningful lives within the realities we now carry.

That’s a wrap on Ohel’s End of Summer! ☀️💙

Across our separate boys’ and girls’ programs, children with special needs enjoyed a few incredible days filled with laughter, friendship, and unforgettable experiences.

The girls enjoyed a pre-Shabbos spa session at their program in South Fallsburg, while the boys got active with sports at their program at Camp Kaylie. 🧖‍♀️🏀

And while the kids were having fun, parents had the chance to catch their breath before the school year begins.

This Labor Day weekend, we’re reminded of the importance of respite for the whole family. Ohel provides respite opportunities throughout the year, giving children time to connect and thrive and caregivers time to recharge.

The sound of Elul at Ohel. 💙

Each day throughout the Hebrew month of Elul, Daniel Shakarov, a Recovery Specialist with Ohel’s Kadimah Program, blows the shofar for participants in our Day Habilitation program.

The sound of the shofar is a spiritual wake-up call—a reminder to pause, reflect, reconnect, and prepare our hearts for the year ahead.

May its sound inspire reflection, renewal, and hope for a sweet new year. 🍎🍯

📚✨ Back to school, backed by community! 💙

Families from across Flatbush joined us for our annual Back to School Bash, hosted togehter with our Family Enrichment Center.

It was an incredible afternoon filled with smiles, connection, and excitement for the school year ahead — with free school supplies, fun activities, resources for families, and so much more! 🎒✏️

A special thank you to the community leaders and partners who helped make this wonderful day possible: Councilwoman Inna Vernikov 🇺🇸 (R), Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, Council Member Farah N. Louis, President Ed Powell and the 70 Pct. Community Council, District Manager Shawn Campbell, and NYPD Deputy Chief Richie Taylor.

And most of all, thank you to all the families who came out and made the day so special. Wishing every student and family a happy, healthy, and successful school year ahead! 🍎📓✨

As we prepare to enter a new year, we invite you to gather with us for a special Pre-Rosh Hashanah Women’s Challah Bake, led by Charlene Aminoff, at the Ohel Family Center in Lawrence.

Together, let’s welcome the year ahead with community and connection as Charlene leads us in hafrashat challah and shares words of Torah and chizuk to awaken our hearts and enter Rosh Hashanah with renewed hope, emunah, and purpose.

Back-to-school season is here! 🍎💛

Ohel’s Director of Resilience Programs and School-Based Services Dr. Carly Namdar recently joined a wonderful team of educators for training on Ohel’s brand-new early childhood SEL curriculum, which includes I Feel That Way and That’s Okay!

Through 16 engaging lessons, including storybooks, activities, classroom visuals, and puppets, the curriculum equips educators to help young children identify emotions, understand how feelings show up in their bodies, and build healthy emotional awareness from an early age.

Because understanding our emotions is a lesson that can last a lifetime. 🌱
