Heartshare Human Services of New York

Heartshare Human Services of New York Building a world where every New Yorker—no matter their circumstance or ability—belongs, matters, and has the power to shape their own future.

Heartshare champions and empowers New York City’s most overlooked and underestimated by promoting health and well-being, creating stability, and unlocking futures. Heartshare exists to remove obstacles, build stability, and allow for greater self-belief, self-advocacy, and independence. We support two specific populations across all of New York City: children and adults with developmental disabilities; and children and families dealing with the trauma associated with family separation. Each population faces its own distinct set of challenges and obstacles — and we are set up accordingly to meet them with understanding, evidence-based solutions, and interconnected programming.

What’s an NYC summer without a trip to the Coney Island Boardwalk? 🎡

Last Thursday, a group of participants from our Avenue L Day Habilitation Program set up shop at Ruby’s Bar & Grill, selling Ash & Co | Purpose Behind Every Bead handmade bracelets and putting their vocational and sales skills to work. We even snapped a photo with our first customer of the day!

A huge thank you to our friends at Ruby's Bar & Grill for welcoming us and extending their support. Now through November, you can round up your bill at Ruby’s to the nearest dollar, with all proceeds benefiting Heartshare.

Together, we’re creating more opportunities for New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities to build independence, put their talents to work, and discover what’s possible. 🤝

Heartshare’s American Dream Program Youth Council recently joined Council Member Rita Joseph for the 2nd annual Luggage of Love event, helping provide families in foster care with brand new suitcases, hygiene kits, back-to-school supplies, and other essentials.

Our scholars received luggage and supplies while also representing Heartshare by making charm and bead bracelets for families attending the event.

The event builds on Council Member Joseph’s advocacy to ensure families in foster care are treated with dignity. Last year, she successfully fought for legislation requiring ACS to provide durable luggage to youth in care instead of trash bags.

We’re proud to stand alongside her and our young people in championing dignity and respect for every child and family in foster care. 💙

A big thank you to the incredible team at Publicis Health Media for welcoming Heartshare to their offices for Community Service Day!

PHM volunteers joined a Paint Pour activity facilitated by Heartshare Director of Arts Programming Will Green alongside artists from Artshare, our visual and performing arts program for people with disabilities. Together, the group experimented with color, technique, and plenty of creativity to make something uniquely their own.

We’re grateful to PHM for creating opportunities for their team to connect with our artists, experience the joy of making art together, and build community 🎨

We’re proud to share that a group of young people living in one of Heartshare’s Children’s Community Residences were honored recently for their commitment to community service 👏

Throughout the winter and spring, our young residents volunteered every Tuesday at Second Chance Agape Worship Center, giving their time and energy to support their community in Queens. We’re grateful to the church’s pastor for recognizing our youth with volunteer recognition awards and creating opportunities for them to serve, learn, and grow.

We look forward to continuing this meaningful partnership when community service resumes in September!

Still riding high after Heartshare Night at the Brooklyn Cyclones!

Last night, hundreds of Heartshare program participants and staff packed the stands to cheer on the Cyclones—and we were honored to be their featured nonprofit partner of the evening.

There was plenty to cheer about: Stanley Brown, President of Heartshare’s Self-Advocacy Council, threw out the first pitch; members of our Developmental Disability Services Associate Board took the field for a competition moderated by King Henry himself; and the Ash & Co | Purpose Behind Every Bead team returned for a second time this summer to sell their handmade bracelets.

A huge thank you to the Brooklyn Cyclones for hosting us, celebrating our community, and shining a light on Heartshare’s mission 🙏💙

Today, on International Youth Day, we’re looking back at a powerful moment from last summer when our St. Vincent’s youth stood alongside Council Member Rita Joseph to help pass the Foster Care Luggage Bill, ensuring that young people entering or leaving care have proper luggage for their belongings.

We’re incredibly proud of our youth advocates, who continue to use their voices to create positive change—not just for themselves, but for generations to come. 🗣️✊

Participants from our Queens Day Habilitation program had a fin-tastic time at a free fishing program last week, in collaboration with Congresswoman Grace Meng and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Thank you Grace Meng and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for helping to make outdoor education and recreation accessible to all New Yorkers! 💙

Who’s ready for a field trip? 😎

This summer, children in Heartshare’s Cornerstone program at Surfside Gardens Houses in Coney Island explored, played, and learned through visits to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, LEGOLAND Discovery Center, Hapik at Industry City, Catch Air, Bowl 360, Max Funland, Chuck E. Cheese, and more.

From climbing indoor rock walls and exploring nature to bouncing through obstacle courses and cheering each other on at the bowling alley, every outing gave kids the chance to stay active, try something new, and make the most of summer.
