What Happens at a Relay Event
There are many moments that create the Relay experience. Specific details vary by event. But the key moments that all events share in common are listed below:

Survivors Lap
Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. We also reco

gnize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. Luminaria Ceremony
After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Fight Back Ceremony
Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 19 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, we are creating a world with more birthdays a world where cancer can’t claim another year of anyone’s life. Anyone can participate in Relay For Life. Friends, families, neighbors, classmates, sports teams, etc., can form their own teams. No matter who you are, there’s a place for you at Relay.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Last Friday the Northern Hennepin County Relay For Life was a great success and raised $31,141! We had 96 Registered Participants, 20 teams and $8,300 in sponsorship!!

Thank you to the Event Leadership Team who began planning this Relay back in January and did a phenomenal job. A very special thank you to our Event Chair, Sharon VanDenbos who works tirelessly to tend to every detail involved with Relay and truly is a big part of the heart and soul of this event.

Appreciation to everyone who helped with our Silent Auction (which brought in $1729), those who helped us honor our Survivors, those that worked on securing Sponsorships, the activities and each of you for all your fundraising!!

We also had 30 people turn in the little "PRIZE" card that was distributed at the parade, churches and other locations in the community. What a joy to be able to share the Relay experience with 30 new people!

You are making a difference in the lives of people affected by Cancer and on behalf of the American Cancer Society - THANK YOU!
