Wheat Outlook from SD Wheat Executive Director Jon Kleinjan 🌾

Hard red winter wheat conditions continue to hang in there, but yields may be lower than last year.

At this week’s SD Wheat Commission meeting, the HRW yield forecast was estimated at 40 bushels per acre, compared to 50 bushels per acre last year.

Some of the poorer quality HRW is being baled for feed, so acres that make it to harvest may still yield okay. Harvest is expected to begin in about 3 to 4 weeks.

Hard red spring wheat is looking a little better. NASS’s first survey estimates South Dakota’s HRS crop at 48% fair and 44% good to excellent.

There’s still optimism for a decent spring wheat crop, but heat in the forecast will be something to watch.

We’ll continue monitoring crop conditions as harvest season approaches.

Wheat Outlook from SD Wheat Executive Director Jon Kleinjan 🌾

Hard red winter wheat ratings slipped slightly this week, with 25% rated poor to fair compared to 22% last week.

As of May 10, NASS estimates 7% of the crop is headed. Projected harvested acres are estimated at 530,000 acres, down 16% from 2025.

While South Dakota hasn’t seen drought impacts as severe as some states, conditions are dry in areas across the state. Producers are saying the same thing: a good rain would be welcome soon. 🌧️

Spring wheat planting is estimated at 87% complete, with 50% emerged. That’s behind last year, but right in line with the 5-year average.

And we’ll end with some good news: USDA-WASDE raised the expected average farm price for wheat in 2026/27 from $5.00 to $6.50. 📈

We’ll continue watching crop conditions and moisture needs across South Dakota.

An increase in demand for local goods encouraged this 20-year-old entrepreneur to launch a farm-to-table business that includes fresh bread made from wheat grown, harvested and milled on the farm.
