The South Country Ambulance Marine Units were out early this morning deploying on the water at 0500 hours to be prepared on post by 0545 hours for the Smith Point Triathlon. Our units were later met by Mastic Beach Fire Department, Mastic Fire Department and Brookhaven Fire Department’s boats. South Country volunteers worked as part of a combined public safety plan that is in place to ensure our citizens can safely enjoy our county and all it has to offer. All went smoothly and there were no injuries or medical emergencies on the water.

From there we traveled over to the Paddle to the Point race in Bellport to standby in case of an emergency. Great morning for both events!

Proving once again that no two days ever look the same in EMS, I provide the following. At 0937 hrs. South Country Ambulance and Brookhaven Fire Department were dispatched to a Motor Vehicle Crash on Sunrise Highway near exit 57 South. Upon the arrival of the first two units containing Chief of Department Greg Miglino Jr and Chief of Operation Joe Craig, it was immediately observed that along with the two vehicles involved, there was a Mute Swan that was being detained by two civilians ( Keri Pisani of Strong Island Animal Rescue League and another unidentified woman) that had stopped. After ascertaining that there were no injuries to the persons in the vehicles, we turned our attention to the Swan and the two civilians trying to prevent it from re-entering the roadway. As luck would have it, one of the civilians was a member of Strong Island Rescue, a group dedicated to helping nature’s creatures that end up in bad situations. Over the next few minutes, we were able to put together a workable plan to safely detain the swan and relocate it to an area that was more suited to its normal surroundings. Keep in mind this was a plan designed by humans without consulting the Swan, who it turned out was initially uncooperative. Through the heroic efforts of the woman from Strong Island Rescue and Chief Craig and FF M. Magnani, the Swan was subdued, loaded into 5-42-81 and transported. Upon arrival at the site where the release took place, the Swan was removed from the vehicle and released. At which point the Swan immediately let the rescue team know that he was not impressed with our efforts and we should back up before we got a chance to feel some real pain. Having grown up around Swans when I was a kid, I understood that they are more than capable of putting a hurt on a human if they felt threatened. So we tactically left the scene (we ran off) and returned to the day’s duties.

It started off as just a quick trip into Bellport Village to get some ice cream with my future wife and her sister. While sitting in my Chief’s vehicle I was approached by a member of the Bellport Chamber of Commerce who said they believed they had seen a small plane crash into the Great South Bay. With that I started my vehicle and radioed into Suffolk County Fire Rescue / Med-Com dispatched and asked if they had a report of any planes going down in that area. They advised me that they didn’t.

Within 60 seconds I was at the rear of the Bellport Yacht Club located at the Bellport Village Dock. I took out my binoculars and did a sweep of the visible area from my location. While doing that, others approached me and gave the same story that was reported to me just prior. They were certain they had seen a plane of some sort go down. Despite that, I had observed nothing and reported that back to Suffolk County Fire Rescue / Med-Com, secured my vehicle and started making my way up Bellport Lane towards South Country Rd to head home to Brookhaven. As I made the right hand turn and began driving east, and was just passing the Bellport Firehouse, I heard the dispatcher put out the alarm for East Moriches Ambulance to report to the US Coast Guard Station in East Moriches for a plane crash (large).

Hence would be the official notification and start to a tragedy that claimed 230 lives, including many from our local community and citizens of 14 different nations. For months our County was thrust into the spotlight as an exhaustive investigation and recovery was undertaken. Literally thousands of Suffolk’s residents and First Responders would take part during that time in supporting the federal effort and that of the family’s impact directly by this tragedy.

To address the outpouring of grief, the Town of Brookhaven and the County of Suffolk, working with the families, erected two memorials, one at Kaler’s Pond in East Moriches, and the other at Smith Point County Park. They are both tastefully done and serve as a meeting place for all to go and remember the lives lost and the impact made on a nation and the world that July 17th, 1996.

Once again last night families from across country and globe came to Suffolk County, specifically the TWA Flight 800 Memorial at Smith Point to remember the 30th Anniversary of this historic and sad event. There to greet them were our leaders from the State, County, and Town. Also present were First Responders who represented their communities, all of which sent people that summer night in July 1996 to help. South Country Ambulance was proud to be among them.

30 years ago today, TWA Flight 800 exploded in the air and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in East Moriches, killing all 230 souls on board just 12 minutes after takeoff from Kennedy Airport. Multiple agencies had responded in for rescue efforts to what would be the third-deadliest aviation accident in U.S. history. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of all 230 souls lost that night. May they continue to rest in peace.
