Update: Water drop alert has ended on 06/17/2026 at 4:00pm.

Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District - MMSD has issued a Water Drop Alert due to the recent heavy rain and storms. Reducing water use citywide will also help ease strain on the City operated Fox River Water Pollution Control Center.

When storms hit, every drop matters! Using less water helps prevent basement backups and sewer overflows.

Please do your part: turn off your taps when not in use, delay laundry and dishes, take shorter showers, and empty your rain barrel.

By the way, did you know the City is serviced on the eastern side by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), and on the western side by the Fox River Water Pollution Control Center (FRWPCC), which is operated by the City of Brookfield, due to straddling the sub-continental divide?!

Common Council Recap- 6/16
We started a little late tonight because the Licensing and Legistlative Meeting went long. Thai was to be expected as they had a very packed agenda with alcohol licenses and fireworks permits. Unfortunately they did not get to my referral or the other ones in the agenda so that will be on the agenda again next month.

During public comment we had one resident who took advantage of the opportunity to speak to us. She reminded us that we take an oath to uphold the constitution and provided us with copies. (Fun Fact- I can still recite the Preamble from memory. I checked when I got home. Thank you Ms. Majeski for having us memorize that in 6th grade.) The resident also talked about elected officials needing to be held to higher standards- which I completely agree with. That is why what Kris Seals posted was especially heinous. He was an elected official who was targeting a religious minority that he also represented with hate speech.

The consent agenda passed without anything being pulled.

There was one referral to Licensing and Legistlative from Alderman Bloom. He would like an ordinance prohibiting AI use in meetings. I’m not sure what prompted this- maybe something in L and L or the strange and inaccurate information that was handed out by an alderman during a discussion on housing once. I am not a huge fam of AI and as a librarian - I want sources cited whenever possible - so I look forward to learning more about this issue and the problem we are trying to solve when it comes up in the agenda.

We then had a closed session but all is well in Brookfield city government this evening.

Agenda for City Council meeting tomorrow night- 7:45pm city hall
The meeting will start with public comment. You can come and have a captive audience to talk about whatever you want for 3 minutes. It’s a great opportunity to tell us what you would like to have happen in our city.
It’s a pretty packed agenda. The planning commission has an addition to Redemption Church on Greenfield Ave, a combination of 2 properties for The Ev. Lutheran Church of Christ the Lord on Brookfield Rd, and allowing Nugget Nation to have outdoor movie nights on the consent agenda. The finance committee has bills to pay, computers to purchase from the computer replacement fund and a new blower that needs to be purchased for the Wastewater treatment plant. It’s very important to keep air moving in there. L and L has lots of beer and liquor licenses and fireworks permits. Public Works has resolutions awarding pavement contracts and we are going to appoint some people to different boards. These are all on the consent agenda so can be voted on in one vote without discussion unless someone asks for something to be removed.
We’re going to close by going into closed session to talk about the mall lawsuit again.
L and L meets at 6:30 and anyone can attend a meeting- though few do. Finance meets at 7 and anyone can attend but again most weeks no one does. L and L’s agenda is very packed so I don’t know if they will get to everything but the last things they are scheduled to discuss are referrals from Alder Hallquist and myself. Mine is a response to the Kris Seals situation affirming that Brookfield welcomes people of the Islamic faith. Mike’s are regarding the hopeful elimination of needing a concrete slab for different accessory buildings and establishing a timeline for dealing with different referrals and requests.
Hope to see you there.

Love this! I will sing the praises of Elmbrook launch program forever. It allows kids the chance to try different careers out while still in high school. I hope we see more partnerships between the city and this program.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 from Brookfield East and Brookfield Central High Schools - especially my daughter Lyla. These kids are going to do amazing things!

The city announced late this evening the plan to fill the vacant seat for District 7 Alderperson. I am glad we are finally moving to action on this. I was not part of the decision making process on how this seat would be filled and have questions. I have emailed our city attorney to hopefully get some answers as to why we are going to appoint someone to the full term vs giving the residents a chance to vote on their representative in April. My thought was to appoint someone to fill the spot until then. Because transparency and communication are very important to me, I will let you know when I receive an answer to my email but it will probably be Monday at the earliest.

I am happy to announce that the Licensing and Legislative committee will be looking at my resolution on Tuesday that I feel affirms Brookfield’s commitment to be a welcoming place to people of all religions. They do have a jam-packed schedule so it is possible that will be delayed. I do hope that filling the seat and passing the resolution will help our city move past the hate speech we saw in April and come together stronger and more committed to moving forward together.

Because sometimes you have to make sure that the beer garden happens….
We will have another special council meeting tomorrow at 5:30 pm. Sometimes people don’t realize how long getting city approval can take. The Brookfield Village, LTD, host a monthly beer garden in the Village area of Brookfield in the summer. I’ve heard it is pretty great. The first one this year is scheduled for 6/11. However, not realizing that the council will need to approve the agreement and that agendas cannot be changed 24 hours before a meeting- there was not going to be a possibility to approve the agreement and the beer garden would need to be cancelled City Staff worked their butts off and got everything ready. So we will have a quick meeting and approve the agreement tomorrow- even though we had a special meeting tonight to approve bind sales.
Full disclosure - there will be a lot of alderperson’s calling into the meeting due to the short notice. I’ll be one of them. It’s the last day of school and our staff has a party planned that evening. So I’ll sneak out to my car for 20 minutes to do the meeting and then rejoin the party. Annoying yes? But I’m so glad that we have found a way to make sure this gets approved and people can have a great time Thursday night. Cheers!

Great News! The mayor must be back at work as I got this email today. I need to go buy 5 $100 Apple gift cards for him for some reason.
Just kidding- these types of messages are always fraudulent. Before you run out and get whatever it is they need, get verbal confirmation. I hope the real Mayor Ponto is back soon and the bad people stay stupid.

Talk to me about the newsletter. Everytime we look at budget it is on the chopping block and we save it. Do we still need it? Would an opt-in email option work just as well? If I tell you it costs $44,000 a year, does it make a difference in your opinion?
