The tomato plants in our courtyard are slowing down, and something else is taking their place.

Residents spent the last few weeks pulling in the last of the summer harvest and turning the beds over for fall. A few have already started talking about what to plant once the weather cools for good: spinach, radishes, maybe garlic for next spring.

Cooler air, earlier shadows, the first few leaves turning at the edge of the courtyard. You can see the shift on the walking paths every afternoon, as we wave goodbye to summer and welcome fall.

The sound of a distant drumline instantly becomes Friday night under the lights, watching your younger brother play trumpet in the high school band while you sit in the bleachers with your best friend. You might not remember what you did yesterday, but you remember exactly where you sat that night, and who you sat next to. A marching band, three blocks away, can turn an ordinary Tuesday into a memory trip back to 1962.

Sound can pull someone back like that, fast and clear, even when a lot else is harder to hold onto.

What does it truly mean to feel safe somewhere?

Physical safety is the easier one to picture: secure entrances, trained staff, a plan in place if something happens. Emotional safety is less obvious, but it matters just as much. It's a resident knowing their routine will hold, that someone will listen when they speak, and that they won't be rushed or corrected in front of others.
