Yesterday the Brook Park Fire Department had the honor of participating in the Cuyahoga County Library Touch-a-truck event in Brook Park. There was such a great turn out of excited, curious youngsters and their families. We had a blast showing them our trucks and our tools of the trade, as well as fielding their many awesome questions! šŸš’ šŸš‘

There a certain things that we train for that we hope we never need to use, but are able to look back and draw knowledge from these trainings. This is one of those times. Over the past three days all three shifts from Brook Park FD, Middleburg Hts. FD, and Berea FD trained on school bus extrication. Such topics included the stabilization in case of a roll over or partial roll over, access in to the bus to treat and remove victims, removal of windows and seats if extra room was needed, and more. Thank you to the Berea City School District for the donation of the retired buses, our instructors Luke Ricketts and Mike Philbin for their time, knowledge, and dedication. And also the chief of each respective department for helping to set this up.

With our retirement of Capt. Lynch last week, there were some new leadership positions that needed to be filled.

First, we have Lt. Burkholder who was promoted from Lt. to Capt. Captain Burkholder is a 25 year veteran of BPFD who was hired in January of 2001. Capt. Burkholder takes over as the commander of A Shift. He is the go to guy and leader for anything technology or IT related when it comes to the Dept. Captain Burkholder is an excellent leader who sets the tone leading by example. Congratulations, Capt. Burkholder! We look forward to your guidance, leadership, and knowledge! Captain Burkholder had his new badge pinned on by his wife!

Next up, with the promotion of Captain Burkholder, that left an open Lieutenants position. FF/Paramedic Dan Root, who is a 18 year veteran of BPFD. Dan was hired in January of 2008. Dan has been an invaluable member of this department, taking on rolls of heading up the set up of our yearly open house, handling the process of our yearly scholarship we give out each year, along with being a great mentor to the younger FF’s on the department. Dan is a vocal and passionate leader who prides himself on always being prepared for whatever may happen during a 24 hr shift. Dan had his new badge pinned on by his wife as well! Congratulations, Lt. Root!

This past Wednesday morning, 2/4/26, at 0800 hrs, Capt. Matt Lynch finished his final 24 hour shift at BPFD. Capt. Lynch was hired by BPFD on 9/7/1994, quickly making himself a true part of the fabric of this department. On 5/12/2008 Matt was promoted to Lt. and again promoted to Captain on 1/1/24. Matt has worn many hats during his time here with BPFD. From Officer, to MDA coordinator, many union positions, and part of the SERT team(s). His experience, knowledge, and cool demeanor will be greatly missed.

Matt has always said he never looked at coming to work as a bad thing, he always woke up saying ā€œI get to go to work today.ā€ He never took this job lightly, and always remembered what an honor and privilege it was to serve this city. Something he has passed on to numerous other members of the dept.

It is an understatement to say he will be missed.

After 31.5 years though, your service is complete, Capt.! You have served with honor, integrity, compassion, and maybe even some humor from time to time. Enjoy your retirement! Please don’t forget about us, and make sure you still stop up! Your distinguished career is complete. Badge #58 is officially retired. Good luck and enjoy!
