PROHIBITION PARTY A ROARING SUCCESS!
A sellout crowd gathered on Friday, April 21 for the 1920s Prohibition-themed fundraiser sponsored by Friends of the Bronxville Public Library at the Bronxville Library.
What a night it was!

From the Speakeasy where a 5-piece jazz band set the mood, to the fun Photobooth & the roving Mentalist Ryan Oakes … everyone had a blast.

The Silent Auction scored big-time with everything from a Hamptons vacation week to an autographed Taylor Swift guitar, plus signed sports memorabilia.

Specialty drinks flowed(not illegal anymore!) and servers passed delicious light bites and desserts. Bronxville Mayor Mary Marvin joined in on the fun.

“The party was such a great success, an amazing evening!” said Carolyn Mattson, FOBPL President. “Because of it, we can fund both the library programs and partially fund the beautiful BPL outdoors project set to launch this fall.”

The 13-member FOBPL Board organized the event along with many talented volunteers.

“ I am amazed at the dedication of this team of women who worked over the last several months to pull off this event,” said FOBPL Secretary Susan Gordon.

Truly a night that 1920s writing luminaries like John Steinbeck, Gertrude Stein, and Ezra Pound would be proud of!

THE MAGNOLIA PALACE is a tantalizing historical novel about secrets, betrayal, and murder within the Frick, one of New York City’s most impressive Gilded Age mansions. Davis pulls readers into a captivating dual narrative exploring the Frick both as a private family residence and the museum it would become. The novel unwinds through the alternating perspectives of two women, both models, whose experiences at the Frick are separated by nearly 50 years and are linked across the decades by the imperious daughter of Henry Clay Frick, Helen Frick.

Fiona Davis is the New York Times bestselling author of six historical fiction novels set in iconic New York City buildings, including The Dollhouse, The Address, and The Lions of Fifth Avenue, which was a Good Morning America book club pick. Her novels have been chosen as “One Book, One Community” reads and her articles have appeared in publications like The Wall Street Journal and O the Oprah magazine. She first came to New York as an actress, but fell in love with writing after getting a master’s degree at Columbia Journalism School. Her books have been translated into over a dozen languages and she’s based in New York City.

The author talk will be moderated by Monica Malpass, business anchor at Nasdaq and formerly the longtime anchor for WPVI-TV's award-winning evening news.

Our Story

The Friends of the Bronxville Public Library, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Bronxville Public Library. Our mission is to focus public attention on the Library’s services, facilities, and needs; sponsor special projects; secure materials that are beyond the reach of the regular Library budget; and perform other services that are helpful to this beloved 105-year-old institution.

The Board of the Friends of the Bronxville Public Library “FOBPL” would like to thank our donors for supporting the library. Due to your generous donations in 2018, we funded the majority of the library’s programs, sponsored a fall author series and a number of special concerts in the Yeager Room, purchased several research databases, and helped to expand the ebook collection, all to the benefit of our devoted patrons.

Programs: A sizable portion of the funds raised by the Friends goes toward adult, teen, and children’s programming. In January 2018, we hosted Min Jin Lee, author of “Pachinko,” a finalist for the National Book Award, a national bestseller and a New York Times Editor’s Choice. Other programs we supported included Intro to Opera for Children, Dawny Dew Music, Musical Munchkins, Baby Yoga, Build A Bear, Rogue Bear Animal Shows, Seciencetellers, Cooking Class for Teens, Getting Organized and Taking Notes for Teens, Lectures on Butterflies and Bronx History, Dating After 50, and Emily Dickinson’s poetry among many others. We have a very active library thanks to the support of the Friends.

Special Concerts: The FOBPL hosted concerts featuring a Viola and Piano concert, Rosemary Loar’s When Harry Met the Duke, The Edna Project, cellist Ani Kalayjian and Patrick Perone, Elvis Impersonator extraordinaire.
