25% of City of Brockton residents don't pay their trash fees and there are no repercussions. So of course, let's raise the rates on the people who do pay their bills.
Maybe stop picking up the trash of people who don't pay, or shut off their water.
REPORTING TO YOU - INFORMATION UPDATE
Tuesday, March 31st at 6:00PM in the City Council Chamber, the Ordinance Committee of the City Council will debate an increase in the city's curbside trash fee.
FACTS:
*An increase to $130 per quarter is requested.
*Because of changes in the contract with Republic Waste, the Enterprise Fund for refuse IS running a deficit of $1.3-$1.4 million this year. (2026)
*For Fiscal Year 2027 - without an increase, the deficit will again be $1.5-$1.6 million.
*Only 3 out of 4 accounts are paying the refuse fee. (See chart below from the city.)
QUESTIONS:
*What is the detailed plan to increase the collection rate?
*What substantive steps may the city legally initiate to have everyone pay their fair share. No business could survive if only 3 out of 4 customers paid what is owed.
NOTE: The city does place a lien on property but unless someone refinances or sells that property, you could wait 20+ years to collect the lien amount.
