On this day in 1918, the World War I Battle of Saint-Mihiel began. Nearly half a million American soldiers waited along a 65-kilometer stretch of the Western Front before the offensive opened at 5 a.m.

It was the first major operation planned and executed by the newly formed U.S. First Army under General John J. Pershing. The offensive coordinated infantry with more than 3,000 artillery pieces, 400 French tanks, and nearly 1,500 aircraft—the war’s largest single air operation.

Within days, the Saint-Mihiel salient had been eliminated, improving vital Allied transportation routes and helping prepare American forces for the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

On this day in 1813, Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry led nine American vessels against six British warships in the Battle of Lake Erie.
After his flagship, Lawrence, was battered into a defenseless wreck, Perry transferred his command to Niagara and renewed the attack. The British squadron ultimately surrendered, giving the United States control of Lake Erie.
That victory reopened an essential supply route, forced British troops to abandon Detroit, and helped set the stage for the American victory at the Battle of the Thames.
The battle remains a remarkable example of determination and leadership under pressure.

On this day in 1943, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower announced Italy’s armistice with the Allies.

The agreement had been signed secretly five days earlier, but its public announcement came only hours before Allied forces landed at Salerno. Italy’s departure from the Axis changed the Mediterranean war—but it did not end the fighting. German forces occupied much of the country, and the difficult Italian campaign continued until May 1945.

It’s a powerful reminder that a decision made at the highest level can change military strategy overnight, while those serving on the ground continue to carry the burden.
