September 11 Memorial Observance

This Friday marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The Bristol Virginia Fire Department has organized a September 11 Memorial Observance to give our community an opportunity to come together, remember the lives that were lost, and honor the first responders and everyday citizens who answered the call that day.

The Bristol Virginia Police Department is proud to stand alongside our partners at the Bristol Virginia Fire Department and other neighboring public safety agencies for this important observance.

Opening Remarks: 8:30 a.m.
Gene Malcolm Stadium Parking Area – Euclid Avenue

In the event of rain, the ceremony will still begin at 8:30 a.m. but will be moved indoors to Bristol Virginia Fire Department Station 1 on Lee Street.

We invite our community to join us as we remember and honor those whose lives were forever changed on September 11, 2001.

“September 11 can never become just another date in a history book. It is our responsibility to remember the lives that were taken, honor those who ran toward danger, and make sure the generations that follow us understand the courage, sacrifice and unity we witnessed that day. Twenty-five years later, we still remember, and we always will.”

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

🌟Community Spotlight🌟

We've featured Project Lifesaver before, but the recent tragic passing of sweet Saylor Hayes has sparked questions about Project Lifesaver and how it can save lives, so we thought we'd share all the details we can.

Project Lifesaver is a specialized search & rescue program run by local public safety agencies whose goal is to find individuals who have life-threatening behaviors, like wandering and eloping. The state of the art tracker system gives local police and sheriff's departments a way to track individuals in order to locate them quickly, but the heart of the program offers so much MORE.

Here, you see our Product Tester, Sammy. Sammy has been enrolled in Project Lifesaver for years. Also in the photo is Lt. Ronnie Leonard, the contact for the Bristol VA Sheriff's Dept Project Lifesaver Program, and a dear friend to our family. On the table in front of him, you can see the trackers, bands, and tracking device used to locate individuals when they elope and wander.

As you can see, the tracker is very small and incredibly lightweight. Sammy doesn't even notice it's there! The band is flexible, but is secured in such a way that cutting it is the only way to remove the tracker. Why? Because individuals with wandering or elopement behaviors can elope anytime, so constant use is absolutely necessary.

The tracker/bracelet are waterproof, and families have a device that they use to check the functionality of the tracker each day. Batteries in the device must be changed regularly, and that's where we get to the BEST part. Officers will meet with your family member regularly. The goal is to build trust and familiarity. The uniform, the badges, etc. - recognizing law enforcement can be vital during an emergency.

As a Project Lifesaver family, we take comfort in knowing the law enforcement is already acquainted with Sammy and his needs, and they are only minutes away if we need them. 🚓❤

Sheriff Tyrone Foster and the members of the Bristol Virginia Sheriff's Office send their condolences to the family members and Martinsville Sheriffs Office members in the passing of Sheriff Steve Draper. Sheriff Draper was a monumental figure in the history of Sheriffs across this great Commonwealth. 🙏🏾💙🖤🙏🏾💙🖤
