Crews with W-L Construction & Paving, Inc. are continuing downtown paving work along 5th, Shelby, 6th, Broad, and 8th streets in Bristol Tennessee - milling and adding a fresh coat of asphalt during daytime hours until the job is completed sometime next week. Beginning Sunday, June 21, they'll transition to State Street, working from 8 PM to 6 AM until this job is completed. The work zone stretches from Commonwealth Avenue to Sullivan Lane near Slater Center. An enthusiastic SHOUT OUT to Public Works officials in both Bristol Tennessee and Bristol Virginia for working together on this project that straddles the state line and for arranging a nighttime schedule that will minimize the disruption to downtown business traffic.

Meanwhile, work is well underway on the pedestrian island near Bristol Train Station that will provide a safe location for photos with the historic Bristol sign and Train Station in the background. The island itself will be completed next week so the surrounding roadway can be paved as part of the State Street project.

And here's another tidbit of info you may find interesting! A durable thermoplastic product with reflective beads will be heat applied to mark lanes throughout downtown, providing greater durability and better night visibility than the paint used in days of yore. And as a final safety measure, a bold pattern has been chosen to mark crosswalks.

Ok, we know all this construction can be bothersome at times, but the end result will be a safer, smoother downtown for both motorists and pedestrians. Please continue to use caution in areas where work crews and heavy equipment are present, plan for delays, and use alternate routes when possible. We're making great progress!

A resounding CONGRATULATIONS to Officer Dalton Cordle and Officer Dawson Shelton, both of whom graduated today from the 9-week Walters State Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy. We're pretty proud to share the news that Officer Shelton also received both the Best Athlete Award and the J.R. Ensor Fi****ms Award, named for a former Tennessee law enforcement officer/fi****ms instructor and presented to cadets who demonstrate exceptional skill, precision, and professionalism in fi****ms training. Both officers are now ready to move on to the next phase of training within the BTPD.

Please join us in welcoming Officer Cordle and Officer Shelton, while we also thank our more senior officers for being incredible mentors. Pictured are Chief Matt Austin, Officer Cordle, Officer Shelton, Capt. Jimmy Dillard, and Lt. Matt Duncan. We're grateful for the work you do!

Please join us in congratulating Lt. Matt Cousins, who celebrated his retirement from the Bristol Tennessee Police Department today after nearly 17 years of distinguished service.

Lt. Cousins joined the BTPD in 2009 – after serving the Kingsport Police Department and Second Judicial Drug Task Force - and was assigned to the specialized K9 Unit soon afterward, working first as partner to K9 Larco and, later, K9 Kai. Trained and certified through the North American Police Work Dog Association, they worked together to make Bristol a safer community. Even after Kai’s passing last year, Lt. Cousins continued to supervise the K9 Unit, lending his expertise and deep affection for animals to the City’s remaining K9 teams. During his long BTPD tenure, he also served as Senior Police Officer, SWAT Team Leader, Field Training Officer, Critical Incident Stress Debriefer, Child Safety Seat Technician, and Fi****ms Instructor. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2021.

Remarkably, his public service career actually began while he was still in high school. He joined the Maryland Army National Guard at the age of 17, then transitioned into active-duty status with the US Army – a member of the 187th Infantry Regiment’s highly decorated “Iron Rakkasans.” Later, as a member of the Tennessee Army National Guard, he was deployed to Iraq, where he provided security during that country’s first democratic election in decades.

Thank you, Lt. Cousins, for your compassion, your courage, and your commitment while serving our community and our great nation. We wish you many years of happiness and continued good health as you begin an exciting new chapter. Godspeed, Friend!

Eugene Wolf was handed the gift of a lifetime 25 years ago when he was asked to create the role of country music’s patriarch, AP Carter in Barter Theatre’s “Keep On The Sunny Side.” Along with Ed Snodderly, he is a member of the country singing duo, the Brother Boys. Their latest album, “On The H***y Tonk Highway with the Brother Boys,” is a compilation of their recordings from 1988-2022 on Germany’s Bear Family Records. They won an IBMA Recorded Event Award for their work on the Jerry Douglas album, “Slide Rule.” Eugene has been a member of Barter Theatre’s acting company since 1997 and has toured his award-winning one-man show, “The Book of Mamaw,” for the last eight years. He is a recipient of a 2025 Bristol Roots Project Tradition Bearer Fellowship. He will be joined by Ivy Sheppard and is delighted to sing and tell what he has learned playing AP Carter.

Join us on June 19 at the Bristol Listening Room (located in the L.C. King Building) for Night 2 of Bristol Sessions Nights. Presented by the City of Bristol, Tennessee, this evening celebrates the next chapter in our 12-night countdown to country music's 100th anniversary in 2027. Changes are coming to Bristol Tennessee Transit! Effective July 1, the cost for a one-way trip will increase from 60 cents to $1 for all fixed-route, Paratransit, and Job Access vehicles. This new rate, recently approved by City Council, is part of a comprehensive approach to improve efficiency and enhance safety. The same rate structure is currently in effect in Bristol Virginia, Kingsport and Johnson City.

Here’s what else is changing:
• Saturday Paratransit and Job Access service will be discontinued.
• Paratransit buses will now run weekdays from 6:15 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• The Penn-Hickory Route is being adjusted to avoid the railroad tracks on Industrial Drive.

To learn more about these changes, please go to https://ow.ly/bJIf50Z9wEM or contact Transit Manager Melanie Fleenor at (423) 989-5688 or [email protected].
