April is National Fair Housing Month, commemorating the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. This Act prohibits discrimination in renting, buying, or financing homes.

For domestic violence survivors, access to housing can make a life-or-death difference — between being able to safely escape abuse, and having no choice but to stay. Tragically, survivors often report that a lack of safe, affordable housing is one of the primary barriers they face if they choose to leave an abuser.

Understanding the different forms of relationship abuse can help people recognize what’s happening and feel less alone in their experiences.
