On June 10, the Atlantic City Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) buoy operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution detected the presence of north Atlantic right whales southeast of Atlantic City, NJ. NOAA Fisheries has implemented a right whale Slow Zone, which will be in effect through June 25, 2026.

To help protect this endangered species, New Jersey Marine Resources asks all mariners to:
• Slow to 10 knots or less within the Dynamic Management Area (DMA)
• Avoid the area when possible
• Keep a vigilant lookout for whale activity

For more details on all NOAA’s vessel strike management zones currently in effect, visit https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/national/endangered-species-conservation/reducing-vessel-strikes-north-atlantic-right-whales -vessel-speed-restrictions.

How are your hurricane plans looking?

Let’s be honest, we know procrastination prevails and everyone rushes to prepare when they know a storm is coming.

A better idea we can suggest is to go over one segment of your plan and supplies at a time and acquire a few items during each grocery store visit so as to not overwhelm yourself.

On this day, we pause to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the invasion of Normandy and recognize the bravery of the entire Allied Forces on this crucial first step of the liberation of Europe.
The Coast Guard was there every step of the way, delivering soldiers to the beaches and rescuing those at sea. We also honor those who gave their lives to help liberate Europe from the Axis forces.

This Coast Guard photo is one of the most iconic and widely shared images of the invasion of Europe. Titled “The Jaws of Death”, it was taken by Chief Photographers Mate Robert F. Sargent, USCG.

The description is: A Coast Guard-manned LCVP from the U.S.S. Samuel Chase disembarks U.S. troops on the morning of 6 June 1944 at Omaha Beach.
